M5 is just a huge heavy boat. At least they kept the V8 and didn’t go with a smaller engine hybrid like merc did with C63, no one wants that trash.

There is a reason prices are skyrocketing on used V12 Ferraris. I would take a used GTC4lusso any day over this new M5
On the next gen M3, I’m guessing we’ll see the I6 paired with the electric motor. (If they can find room for it!) Imagine a 700 hp M3 that weighs 4500 lbs.

I would rather BMW continue to offer the platform as it exists today… speed isn’t everything, and these hybrid approaches may save a few mpg but aren’t worth the weight, ride quality and size penalty ….

The 911 has caved in the 992.2 in at least a few models, so it feels inevitable… the e-ray c8 vette as well, although a different approach than Porsche and at least GM offers the non-hybrid variants as well.

For those of you currently in the F90, are you considering downsizing to the M3?

Ok let's talk conspiracy theories. Here's mine. In 2016 the CEO of BMW walked into the design department of BMW and told everyone they are fired. Take a walk get lost. Then the CEO went outside of the building and asked if anyone walking the streets needed a job. The CEO started waving people inside and asked one question. 1) Do any of you people have any idea about the history or the customer base of BMW? When they all answered no they were hired on the spot for the design team for every BMW model including all the M's. He gave them crayon colored drawings of past BMW's 3/5/7/X and M series and told them to design a new one for each series.

The comparable equivalent of the M5 would probably be the Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid. And unfortunately it doesn't weigh a thousand pounds less, I believe it's more like 250 pounds difference.

It is more like 100 pounds difference and way less on power (50 less)
So the m5 will be quicker especially that bmw underates their engines
The problem is will it be quicker then the f90 to be worth the change or it is slower
Will kniw soon i guess

Right but many here are bemoaning the weight and don’t want a hybrid. A Panamera without the hybrid would be an alternative in that case.

Hell yes. Wolf in sheep's clothing, just as an M5 should be. Love it, looking forward to the full reveal.

I was shopping a new M3 vs a used m5. The M3 felt like better use of interior space. At 6'4 with long legs, there was no rear seat in the m5. The M3 I could still get someone behind me. Took a look at the new gen 5, and felt the same in that regard. So m3 won for me.

I mean next up behind a m5 would be a rs6/rs7. Engine is plenty capable, busy sadly needs a tune to get it to wake from its standard programming.

As with electric steering, and any discussion regarding some sort of electrification whether it’s hybrid or full EV, the days of “light weight” cars is pretty much over, at least for the immediate future. Either you accept it, or you move on to another brand/car.

Generally speaking, all the Germans are pretty much progressive with the trend or direction of the automobile industry. So if you’re looking for a more “dated” approach to cars, Germans are probably not it, unfortunately.

I was the biggest G80 hater when it was announced. I was advocating for everyone I know to not get one.

Im eating those words now

I dont think it looks bad; you certainly cant tell the weight of it just from the looks. At looking like a traditional german executive saloon, it excels. I only hope that front bumper doesn’t look like i think it might. #fingerscrossedemoji

Exactly! But if the car stayed the same, they'd be complaining about how it looks the same as the one before it. Make it make sense!

I can’t see the M3 needing more power. The 500hp (and looks like 520 soon with another facelift) is already plenty, CD timed it 0-60 in 2.9 seconds.

Everyone can easily make a fast electric car now. Companies need to distinguish themselves in other ways now, to me the M3 is the perfect 4 door performance every day driver car.

Only thing I am considering trading it in for is a used GTC4 but those are still over $200k for a 6-7 year old Ferrari which is crazy. In a pre-Covid world they would be $140-$150k or about the same as a new fully loaded M5
