The 370Z Nismo already had 350HP and Nissan barely sold any towards the end. There has been the opportunity for 10+ years to have exactly that, so I'm aboard the boost train with the new Z. An N/A engine in the new car would just not sell well by comparison. Maybe if they did something like the high strung Nismo 380RS back in the 350z generation but that was limited production anyways.

I'm not disagreeing with you on the N/A thing, but those days are long gone for the most part. The newer Nismo 370Zs are perfectly suitable for that kind of experience, and were available for a long time, but I'm glad Nissan moved on.

I dunno, the previous Z sold slow because it was what, basically 20 year old design. Give the engine a work over, have her breathe a bit better, like a rev more revs, get to say 375HP at 7K RPM and boom, proper simple sports car and save 50 pounds in weight too, maybe 100. .

The VQ37 is by far the worst itaration of the VQ engine. The old VQ engine got bored and stroked to the point where it got to be one of the least refined engines in the industry. Take a 370Z out and run the engine to redline. Once you get near 6000 RPM it sounds like a trash compactor that's going to explode any second. It's one of the least pleasing engines I have ever driven in a sporty car. I can only imagine how bad a 4 litre version would be as the cooling was already compromised at 3.7 litres.

I agree, i drove one on a test drive, it was a small SUV, like X1 small, infinity. Engine was horrible, rough as hell. EX37 I think it was.

I think it's mostly the expense of making such an engine available in a car at a particular price point. My 911 has a 3.8 liter N/A flat 6 that makes 408hp from the factory. So it is definitely possible without a large output. More likely to be found in more expensive cars with more expensive engines though.

A flat six is also a whole other ball game. A larger displacement V6 would be so unrefined especially if they were building it for lower tier applications. Also, I can't imagine what else they would put it in. I think this engine was the most logical choice to get to/past the golden 400hp mark, and still have it make sense in other vehicles in their lineup.

This is the first sports car under 150k that I've gotten legitimately excited about since I bought my R8 9 years ago. If I had the space then I'd probably buy one as a long term keeper. Maybe a Nismo version when it comes...
I wanted a 4.0 L, high revving V8.

Not hard but you cannot have that low end turbo torque with a high revving 6cylinder NA car that allows you to gain a lot of MPG. That's the driving force of many performance cars going turbo now.

It actually looks really good IMO. Nice, clean design without being overstyled. Interior is surprisingly acceptable for what it is: an MT sports car that costs 2/3 of the competition. My biggest gripe is that Reverse is in the wrong damn place and that feels like it's getting nit-picky. Even tells you the diff oil temp and has a mechanical LSD!

A nice C6 Z06 is nearly the cost of a new Supra.

I don't want to feed those consumables after I spend $2500 to fix the heads.

With the projected availability date being May/June. I would guess probably Feb/March timeline.

Might be the angle of the gas station pic but the noses look longer than I expected.

Still a good looking set of wheels.

It would be an expensive redesign effort, it would need direct injection and benefit from different bore/stroke. My understanding is the VQ was bored as far as they could go without sleeving. Would probably benefit from the newer valvetrains too.

I’m just going to say that it was very overrated in all iterations compared to the very best sporty engines. It felt like a bit of a truck engine to me in that it had decent torque down low but was never anything you wanted to take to redline. I owned a G35C w VQ35DE, so I’m not being anti Nissan here. I thought it was worse overall than the BMW M54 in the ZHP even though it was rated for more power. Even the best version pales in comparison to S54 which would still be a top notch engine if it were in a car today with appropriate weight, and that’s a 20 year old design too. I understand S54 is not impressive on paper necessarily anymore but it has a responsiveness that’s not found in most NA engines that are left outside of exotics and the GT versions of Porsche 9A1. Of course, S54 is heavy and wouldn’t pass emissions.

Paled in comparison.............to an engine where rod bearing changes are considered normal? The fanboism.
