I also saw the movie on the opening day. You guys have all made valid points however there are some things that I needed to chime in.

1. The Camcorder recorded about 7 hours worth of footage but the movie just decided to show you about 1.5 hrs of it. The proof is that the video taping began at night time of Rob's going away party but end of the footage it was the morning of the next day, so definitely not just 1.5 hours of footage. However, you could argue that the filmer may have stopped recording at some points during the movie

2. The beginning of the movie showed captions of U.S. Defense Department which means that the United States government found the tape as the evidence of the incident of that day therefore it is not as if the viewer found the tape on the floor.

But again it is just a movie so it will be favored by people with different interests in cinematics. I personally loved the story although it was just like the Gozilla and also wish it showed the aftermath of NYC. I saw the IMAX version of the movie and it got me really dizzy through out the movie. Most of the time I couldn't even look at the screen because it was so shaky. My advice is that IMAX actually has a negative effect on this movie so save your money and watch the normal one!

I got dragged to this monstrosity. It's a cross between Godzilla and Blair Witch Project. Uber gayness; save your money for something worthwhile.

Go rent "Primer" if you want an engaging and mindnumbing movie. This crap isn't fit for human consumption.

Made 41 million opening weekend, that's not too shabby...

The movie had potential, just wished it wasn't filmed first person style. Imagine trying to watch a movie where the camera man had Parkinson's Syndrome. It shakes like that, almost the entire movie.

Then it wouldnt have been as intense. Also it wouldnt have been as original.

I didn't find it intense, I just like monster movies and the talk of a sky scraper sized monster was almost an instant must see for me. I wanted to see more of the monster, and i wanted to see the Army drop a nuke on its ass. Missiles and tanks didn't do anything to it.

But thats the whole point. You wanted to see those things so you could convince yourself that it was killed or at least know that it was able to be hurt by it. However, without seeing it, your mind is taking over the possibilities of the outcome.

If you saw it get destroyed then it would have been like every other simple horror movie out there.

I guess so, the whole movie seemed like a marketing scheme. It got a lot of people talking about it, hell, look what we're doing. Doing so draws more attention and increasing ticket sales and such. I hope there is a part two with explanations on the origin of the creature and how the military took care of it.

I dont. I like not knowing. It proves that life is all about "what if's" and that nothing is guaranteed. It played out like reality, not some scripted movie with a beginning, middle and end. It was plausible.

Granted his recent films are nowhere near the level of his old ones but still are decent.

And yet again you generalize about BMW drivers, how many BMW owners have you met? If less than 100 then your judgement call is so stupid.

You need to grow up and realize not everyone/everything is the same. Because a few things are the same does not justify generalizing a whole group.

I'm done with this anyways. Unless you can bring something up that isnt the same bullshit of you generalizing then there is no point on talking.
I said most, try not to misquote. You may not dress like a goth, but I am sure you are into most of the same stuff. (e.g. Most of Tim Burton's terrible films)

I've only met about 25, and I have seen well over a hundred. (You can tell a lot about a person by body language.)
I know not everyone/everything is the same, hence the word 'most'.
Do you believe in statistics Blitz?? Do you believe in our voting system?? Then you generalize. I don't mindlessly categorize people into one group, I back it up with some sort of knowledge.

Cloverfield is not a thinking movie...you guys are looking way too deep into it. I saw the first showing for a dollar with no expectations. It was good for what it was.

At the end of the movie, supposedly the message played backwards says "We're still alive" or "it's still alive."

How can a movie be a marketing scheme?? They came up with a 'marketing scheme' for the movie. That was to keep everything a secret and make people wonder about it by releasing bits and pieces of information. I don't see how it affected movie sales, because people would have seen it opening night, told all of their friends that it sucked and announced it on the internet. People would rather see the movie for themselves, and then determine if it was good or not.

Also, isnt any type of advertisement for a movie with quotes from The New York Times and others saying how great it is, hyping it up??

[[[[[[[[SPOILER]]]]]]]]]

At the end it tells you that it is still alive, even after the bomb.
(Correct me below if I'm wrong, a couple of us ended up talking about it at IHOP the other night, and one did a bunch of research into it.)
One plot idea is that the place of origin is off the coast of Japan. A drilling company found some type of fluid off the coast of Japan, and a company decided to implement it in a drink. The drink is called 'Slusho' and they decided to release it first in NY. Something happened and almost all of the 'Slusho' ingredient they discovered in Japan eroded away. Turns out that the ingredient was the monsters main food source. It then traveled to NY in search of food, and that is how it came to be. I think he also said something about the main character working for the 'Slusho' company.

The thing that fell behind the ferris wheel was part of a satellite, that this company owned.

Do your own research, I don't know if any of this is accurate.. Just going on word of mouth, as I haven't done any research into this movie.

What is a thinking movie?? A movie with math problems built into it that you have to solve?? Don't most people end up looking too far into a movie?? This movie stimulates the mind because you end up wondering about it, and during the movie you are thinking about why certain things are happening, and wtf is going on.

Yes the trailers were all teasers and that was brilliant marketing, got a lot of first day ticket sales. I'm also saying the movie itself didn't explain much, and had people talking about it, words spread and more people went to see it...that's what i meant when i said marketing scheme, i should've worded it carefully...

I think a good amount of people will continue to see it even after the first week.

I liked it although not original in thought, it brings new life to that genre of movie (monster movies)

plus theres also few references to the TV show LOST in the movie
