4 pages into this thread and not a single mention of UGK anywhere.....c'mon now and you guys call yourselves hip hop fans? No mention of Geto Boys?

Props to those who mentioned Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, Mob Deep, RUN DMC, Beastie Boys, Eric B and Rakim, etc. Also slightly disappointed there is no mention of Grandmaster Flash, Slick Rick, Marley Marl, Afika Bambaataa, Kurtis Blow, Doug E. Fresh.....I don't know, maybe because I was an 80's kid and was into the scene early for and 8 year old kid from a small town in TN. From my perspective how can one appreciate something without knowing the origins? It's much like how people appreciate art but have no clue what went into it to create the image or fail to see the influence that created it. You can't fully appreciate architecture, if you don't understand the foundation.

My $.2 is that yes rap, just like every other music genre has evolved. What I always find humorous is that the new youngsters that enjoy mumble rap and the pop-ier type stuff like to talk smack about old school rap but fail to see how the music they bash paved the way for the, in my opinion, garbage that they listen to now. Everyone's taste in music varies much like style; some have taste and some don't....and yes each genre of music has their all-stars and their garbage. Unfortunately, music isn't about how great a song is anymore it's about how much money someone can make off it. Take this considering the notion that we, as the general public, make stupid people famous for stupid shit now, it's no longer about the music but about the execs bank account. The musicians are just as easy to blame too. It's all too easy to come up with a catchy hook that means nothing and says nothing, thrown on top of some autotune bullshit and a generic ass studio made beat. It's easier to crank out tune after tune and hope one is a hit rather than just focusing on each song and make it a masterpiece and then start the next. It's like a sniper using a machine gun, spraying the target with bullets and hoping that one hits the mark.

Notable favorites of the new era are Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller, ASAP Rocky, Logic, G-Eazy & Lil Dicky. To be honest here, I only like about 10% of their music.

I am comfortable with my age, my taste in music and handing things down to the new generation to run things but they have to respect the creators and originators in order to keep things alive. Once a genre's only influences are each other is when you end up with what we have today. Remember when we used to hear samples of old funk, James Browns' Funky Drummer and different genres's in the beat instead of this same old tired garbage?

I was wondering if/when someone would bring up the Godfathers of the genre. Not lost on me or forgotten; just didn't make the top 10. I think it's an age thing. If we had any folk in their 50s chiming in, perhaps there would be more love for them shown?

For me it all comes down to exposure. No internet back then so what you listened to was a direct connection with who you were exposed to. with no older siblings I got all my musical influences from other kids in school. I went from a 90% white, middle class middle school to 50% white highschool in '87. Got exposed to all kinds of music that I never would have discovered on my own in that '87 to '92 span. Walked into shop class one day and heard NWA; My little 14 year old mind was blown!

I can completely relate with the first time I heard NWA, I was 12. My mother and father had divorced and my mother had remarried and moved to a larger city. My older sister had made some new friends and she invited me to come hang out with them. We get in the car with her new friends vehicle that was referred to as "The Bucket" and suddenly Nobody Move was blasting. I was blown away. I was also introduced to Too $hort and some Eazy E that day. My life was never the same.

The man has made an insane number of songs. Are you truly saying you hated each and every one of them? Or do you hate his music by default, simply because it’s Drake?
Me personally, I can't get past his monotonous drone sounding voice. Tried to listen to his last release all the way thru to write a review about it and give a FAIR assessment and turned it off after about the third or fourth track because it all sounded the same. No inflection, no emotion, and no soul imo. I'm not knocking him because he most certainly sells and has a bevy of fans but it's a lot of hype.

Music styles evolve and change, this is true, but there are some lyricists out there that aren't mainstream that Drake couldn't hold a candle to.

This. Drake is a drone. Not saying he doesn't display some form of talent, but just because one makes songs doesn't mean they are good. In this day and age it doesn't require heart, soul or talent to be popular, famous or "successful."

I learned something new today - that there's such a thing as 'mumble rap'. Previously, i had just referred to this stuff as 'shit'.

Some of the posts in this thread make me laugh. People posting videos of shitty mainstream songs doesnt prove your point that modern rap sucks... All the old heads acting like they didnt release shitty music back then too. Sometimes you have to dig for gems, but theyre there.

If you get lucky you find the new music with the old school beats

An these comments about mumbling lol, just avoid the music you cant understand? Shocking that this actually needed explaining, I mean I get it theres dudes who mumble (Lil Xan, dude is so high he forgets how to speak), but just avoid it as I do.

If you listen to the lyrics of Nas, etc. and the ones you mentioned, there's actually something there, do i agree with it all, no, but at least it had a purpose.

I dont like the double standard that exists, making fun of people who aren't them, and yet its not racist?

Here's an oldie but goodie:

When ALL of hip-hop and rappers came together to address violence in the community. We'll never have this masterpiece again...

Anyone that you think is a legend participated. It was the "We are the World" for the hip-hop community. Digest it...
