I don't think it would be an i? At least yet. At a future vehicle showing last year Touring, M5 CS. They did mention the EV experimental prototype of packaged into the current M2 which is not destined for the upcoming generation or outgoing model but strictly for research purpose.

Then I misunderstood you; I took "there is no 2-series EV in the pipeline at this point in time [...] unless you take into account the Active Tourer" to imply a 2AT BEV (not PHEV) was possibly upcoming.

Seeing how an iX1 is all but a given and they share a platform, this would've made some sense...

Not that I'm very interested in the 2AT anyway

BMW will never do it, but a small m2 kinda full electric small sports car with retro styling kinda similar to the 2002 concept would be amazing. Instead theyre gonna shit out crossovers and gaudy SUVS. smh

Bigger, bulkier cars = more room to store heavy, space-consuming batteries.

An old(er) version of the current generation of users, likely using advanced SSD state-of-the-art battery tech, will look back on the current vehicle battery size & weight, battery range and recharge time the way we currently do about DOS-asaurus obsolete floppy disks and their storage space, longevity and loading/writing ("saving") speed/time ("tack...tack...tack - damn, bad sector").

2022 BMW iM2: Details of the 1000kW electric coupe revealed

BMW M's birthday present to itself is said to be the iM2, offering an astonishing one megawatt of electric power.

Details of the 2022 BMW iM2 have been revealed, and it's set to offer more power than a modern Formula One car.

According to Car Magazine, the 1000kW all-electric performance coupe from BMW is said to be a birthday present to itself, as the illustrious M division approaches its 50th birthday in 2022.

It seems only fitting the occasion should be commemorated with a one megawatt M car.

Though the model is based on the upcoming rear-wheel-drive 2022 BMW M2 CS, the battery-powered iM2 uses a total of four electric motors to ensure all of its power gets to the ground.

Known internally as 'Project Katharina', it's expected the BMW iM2 will offer a 0-100km/h time of less than 2.5 seconds.

Sources familiar with the project have reportedly told the UK's Car Magazine the 1MW BMW iM2 is capable of inducing wheelspin at more than 120km/h, even in the dry.

Furthermore, it's said the car can lap Germany's legendary Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit in around 9 minutes and 50 seconds – faster than the recently-released, track-focused Porsche 911 GT3.

While 'Katharina' has yet to get the final stamp of approval from BMW management, it's understood the car maker is exploring the possibility of offering a limited production run for public consumption.

Though details are thin on the ground, insiders have said to expect rear seat deletion, carbon-fibre roof and panels, thinner glass, and light-weight alloy wheels.

Whether or not the iM2 makes it to production, sources say its technology will trickle down into a 450kW BMW iM4, powered by a 120kWh battery pack.

BMW has yet to release details on the new electric i4, but earlier industry rumours pointed towards three variants initially: the i4 eDrive 35, the i4 eDrive 40, and the range-topping i4 M50.

Up until now, it was unknown whether BMW was pursuing a full-fat M version of the i4, or whether the 390kW i4 M50 would be the flagship performance model.

"On the high-performance battery electric technology, there is still some time that we need until technology is ready and can take it on with an existing high performance car, like an M3 or M4," BMW M CEO Markus Flasch told Australian media in September 2020.

“This will take some more time, but we’re working on that."

It’s interesting that the author originally had this botched. On the website, it now reads:

Also, he cites UK magazine Car, but the embedded link just goes to their front page.

At any rate, this mostly reads as fiction. However, it would not be surprising to see some sort of electric M concept car next year.

This Instagram-post has screenshot of the (upcoming? new?) Car Magazine issue, where they claim an iM2 was in the works (and show renders of it):

At least the (only) screenshot of the article on the last page does not mention the iM2 at all and personally I doubt it (i) will show up at all in the near future and (ii) would be based directly on the G87 as they make it look like...

Yep, I saw your disclaimer. But, not all rumors are equally credible - just sharing my two cents on this one.

Anyway, thanks for posting the Car article. By far the most interesting part was the very last paragraph. In it, the author claims to have inside information confirming that the next 3 Series (chassis code not yet known) will be the first product built on the Neue Klasse architecture.

I had been wondering about this since we know that both the debut of that platform and the next 3 Series SOP were slated for 2025. Assuming the claim holds, this all but guarantees that the next 3 Series and M3 will give up the inline six engine. I say this because, although we know Neue Klasse can support combustion engines, reportedly it is only those with three or four cylinders.

But as with MINI and the Electric JCW GP. BMW admitted privately to experimenting with an existing M vehicle purely for research purposes.
The small footprint of the M2 allows for research into packaging the prototype as well as investigating weight issues etc.
The next M2 remains ICE for now.

No alcohol involved this time around:

"Jägermeister" was the internal code name for the E92 M3 GTS.

"Pyrat" was the internal code name for the E82 1M.
