For Chinese, it's a no-no to marry your paternal cousins (cousins on father side, with the same surname), but it doesn't really matter that much if you marry your maternal cousins (cousins on mother side with different surname). Also, IIRC, you can marry your paternal aunts children because they have a different surname, but I don't know this for sure.

With chinese making up the largest population on this planet i fail to see the need to marry cousins in way shape or form let alone consider it.

Just an alien concept to me.

I am of indian origin, its completley frowned upon/not allowed in my culture (Sikhism). Couldn't do it.

Marrying cousins is more to do with no suitable heirs being available for daughter or keeping wealth in the family and stuff. And in poorer rural villages in india etc its to do with fathers making good on promises to other families in the form of dowries etc. In this modern day and age there is no need for that.

I don't quite understand the concept either. It seems to be of a patriarchal thing that cousins from the father side can't marry whereas cousins from mother side can. This type of marriage usually happens in the context of a pre-arranged marriage (which rarely happens now), or for maternal cousins that begin to hangout since very young.
