Try sitting in one, as I've tried it in the past and it seemed very tight for my liking and I'm only 5' 11".

On another note E36 M3 is great choice, but I would skip older supras (87-91) as they feel heavy, have head gasket issues and rust at rear wheel arches all the time. I owned an older 87 supra turbo which was completely stock and at about 120k or so miles head gasket blew out and wheel arches rusted out for 2nd time (it was fixed previously).

Intersting as I completely agree with all points above especially that they are heavy and very sluggish in 1st & 2nd Gear but once you get it into mid to high 2nd they rip; the turbo models that is

I'd advise sitting in one as well. I am 6'1" and owned one for several years. I fit in it fine without the seats all the way back.

As for insurance, I don't recall it being horrendous on insurance; although, I think it was more than my BMW.

this car

mercedes 190e cosworth - $8k

parts might be hard to find if something breaks though

You can also get an MR2 spyder at $10k (probably can find one with a 2zz swap at that price too), but an s2000 would be a better car.

Yeah, not really a sports car in any way, but then neither is any of the 325s being mentioned.

I was thinking GTI, but having driven a couple of Miata's and given the huge aftermarket and chances of finding a nice little ole' lady owned copy?

I'm going with Miata. The S2000 is a good car, but the inventory of unmolested kid tortured copies is going to be scary low.

Besides, Miata is a true sports car, not a lot of other options.

I think you are misreading the posters intent- he's saying that the cars you listed ARE fun and responsive to performance mods. The way the word "read" was used here could be substituted with "interpreted as" or "in other words".
