I don't think people realize how close to shore sharks come. I'm on long island and most people think that there aren't many sharks close to shore but in reality (my uncle does all of the shark fishing tournaments) there are tons right off the southern coast. My uncle tells me how close some of the fisherman go all the time. He actually got bit by a 197 lb mako they pulled aboard this past weekend, needed 5-6 stitches on his leg. His reponse to it "I got it back" and he sent me a pic of him next to the shark hanging upside down on the dock. Crazy thing is that he was able to see the shore when he caught the shark. Makes you think twice when you're entering their domain.
Totally Ture.

**not a near death story**
A friend owed me a favor and took us shark fishing for pay back. He chartered a boat and we started heading south from St. Pete beach. He took us to a little island called Eggmont Key just south of Ft. Desoto Beach. He started heading towards the island. We were getting so close i asked if he needed to get something from shore. Nope, we dropped anchor about 40 yards from the beach and put to lines in. Picked up four 3-4 foot sharks in a matter of 45 min.

We pulled up and went towards the much more popular beach at Ft Desoto. Did the same thing, set up shop about 50yds from the beach where there are 100's of people on the beach and in the water. Within an hour we reel in a 10 hammer head. Too big to even pull up onto the boat. in hind sight, it was probably better that we couldn't cause it would have freaked out all the beach goers to see us pull that monster out of the water. haha

holy there are some crazy stories on here.. mine's not too crazy but it's probably the closest

about 10 yrs ago (when I was 14 or so) I was on a flight back from Taiwan to the states, china airlines- notorious for horrible flight safety, halfway across the pacific ocean the captain turns on the fasten seat belt sign, instantly after it goes on the plane goes into free fall mode, and I mean that literally. not sure if you guys remember but the older boeing 747s had only one main screen for the movie (not individual screens like nowadays) and it would show altitude etc.. and the numbers were just dropping like mad.

stuff was flying everywhere, people were screaming.. the drop came to a stop and we raised altitude again, but then the same thing happened a few minutes later. everyone was holding hands praying, people were throwing up everywhere, flight attendants were throwing up (that's what really got me scared) when you see flight attendants scared something's up. my mom called one of the older male flight attendants over (he looked like he was in his 50s). he told us everything was fine and not to worry, this was just part of the flight....

long story short it happened a few more times and the plane was a mess with stuff everywhere and smelled like barf the whole flight back, when we finally made it back to sfo and landed the flight attendant we spoke to (the older guy) came over to us and admitted that he's been in the line of aviation (flying/flight attendant etc..) for over 30 years and this was the one flight he thought he might not make it out of but he didn't want to scare us when we initially asked him..

I've never flown on a plane over the pacific again since then, yep scared now.

HOLY crap! that would of scared the shit out of me

When i was 8 a friend and i decided we wanted to see if we could climb up to the top of a vacant 2 story house. When we got to the top i was looking over the edge at the highest point (probably about 25-30ft) of the house and my friend was behind me, when he turned around to get my attention he didnt realize how close he was to me and knocked me off head first. I ended up hitting an a/c unit with my arm and head. When i woke up i was covered in blood and in an ambulance. Ended up breaking my arm in 4 different places (required 2 surgeries and 8 pins), had like 6 staples in my head, a fractured skull, and a broken collar bone.

That doesnt even compare to my buddy rich though, his story gives me chills every time i hear about it. When he was 12 they had a big tornado come through. His mom took him and his 2 sisters to the bathroom and they all piled into the bathtub. Unfortunately they took a direct hit from an f4 tornado. His mom said that it ripped off the roof and when the walls started to go she tried to hold on to all 3 but he was sucked up into the tornado. After it passed she said they (mom and 2 sisters) crawled out of the debris and frantically started looking for him. A police officer found him about 200 yds away in a field in really bad shape. He was in a coma for 3 months and went through many surgeries to stay alive. Today all he has is some pretty big scars on his legs, back, and head. Lucky ass dude

Yeah, my humor has been hit or miss lately.

I've done some stupid stuff where I could have died or been seriously maimed but lucky so far.

I'm curious though, has anyone had a "near death experience" where you're dead temporarily and you see "the light" but someone says it's not your time and you come back?

Damn yea, that shit is scary.

Flying into Kuwait from Iraq, the C-17 crew decided they wanted to "test the plane out" and did a combat landing into Kuwait. The rapid descent made stuff fly everywhere, a couple of people got knocked in the head, face, etc with weapons that came loose from under the seats, and some bags nailed people pretty hard too. Even though it was wrong, a few people took their seatbelts off once we got in the air and fell asleep, because they wanted to be more comfortable or whatever; it was only a short flight. One guy that was sitting three rows in front of me before the descent wound up five rows behind me after we landed.

There were a few higher ranking officers on our flight with us, and saw the crew in the back laughing as stuff (and people) were flying around. The entire Air Force crew got a reprimand once our Brigade commander found out about the incident and made a stink about it. The crew did it to mess with us, but a couple of people got hit in their heads pretty hard so they got in trouble.

So, some of you may or may not believe this, i'll try to find the article but here it goes...

My dads friend from the gym has a brother in law who was casually walking down the street of NYC, he was in his early fifties. As he was walking past a hospital, he has a heart attack and literally drops dead. The staff rush him inside and immediately try to start bringing him back. 40-50 minutes later the guy comes back to life.

Now for the freaky part. After several months the brother in law is legit a changed man. Went from being a grumpy a55 hole to the most humble person you could meet. My dads friend finally gathers up the courage to ask him what he remembers from being technically dead for 40-50 minutes. I guess it is one of those situations similar to asking a guy who went to war what it was like, it's just not acceptable. His response is simple, "I saw everyone". He said that he saw all of his passed relatives and friends and everyone was there together.

Obviously some people won't believe stories like this but it 100% is a true story because he did some commercials for the hospital that saved his life. When I have more time i'll do some research and see if I can pull up the article.

Yep, I'm on LI as well and have come across a shark or two getting in the way of some fishing. Mostly sand sharks but the makos, threshers and great whites are definitely out there. In the bay one time just east of the Ponquogue bridge, we saw a really large shadow under out boat. We had a 15-foot Johnson 40 and this thing was almost as big as the boat. Just swam off with no issue.

What's really crazy is aerial footage in Florida showing all those sharks within feet of swimmers in the water.

Five years ago, I was driving back to my friend's town after we all had dinner. One of my buddy's cousin came with me so that I wouldn't ride alone. It is a bit passed midnight and we are coming up on an S curve that is notorious for it's blind turns and for causing accidents. As I'm rounding the first bend to the left at around 45mph I see a pair of headlights racing down my lane maybe 10-20ft in front of me. I manage to react quick and turn the wheel violently to the left onto the incoming lane, but it is too late. The cars hit head on and spin out of control. My car ends up facing the way we were coming from and his the other way. Upon impact all I hear is a loud bang, white dust from the airbags everywhere and ringing in my ears. Suddenly everything including time seem to slow down. Instances in my life up until then flash before me, then I blink and I find it hard to breath, talk or hear. I look to my right and my friend isn't moving. I'm a bit claustrophobic so I manage to barge open my door and I stumble out. My face feels wet and warm with blood, my left wrist has two layers of skin torn off it, and it's hard to walk. I look around and I see the man that hit us stumble out of his car. He looks up and sees me staring at him and runs towards the vineyards off into the cold night. I turn my attention to my friend and ask her if she is breathing okay, she can barely make out a mumble. Loads of cars are stopped now and rushing to our side. I can tell I'm not looking good by the looks of horror on a woman's face. I quickly tell them to call CHP and tell them that the guy had run off into the vineyards. A few of the people try to pull me away from the wreck and tell me to rest, but I go back to the car and see the whole front end smashed in. I somehow manage to pull her out and can tell she is in pain. We set her down on top of the hood of a car and I put my jacket and shirt on her because she kept complaining about the cold and the pain. I reach up and touch my face and both hands come away red, I feel tired and exhausted. I touch my knees and I feel a gap in my left knee and feel my sweatpants wet and warm with blood. CHP, FD and paramedics show up and we're taken to the hospital. My spine was dislocated, left wrist had burn mark and was strained, and the left knee received 9 stitches to patch up the flap of skin. My friends had bruised ribs, lower body and was in a wheel chair for about 1-2 months. When I was being stitched, the officers asked me to confirm the description of the man about 6-7 times before taking me past him down the hall to confirm it was him. Cars were totaled. The man who hit us was drunk, his 3rd DUI, he had a suspended license, no insurance, ran off to hide into the vineyards, was later given 5 years in jail and all expenses. Still remember that day like it was yesterday and the horror on my father's face when he arrived at the scene to see my Honda Civic completely smashed in and fearing the worst. To this day I find it hard to stay out late and let alone drive at night. I still get goosebumps when going through that turn. Oh, and after my accident they completely fixed that S curve and made it wider so it is not a blind turn anymore.

I'll get a screenshot once I'm on my computer. It's much improved now and not nearly as dangerous as before since you can actually see oncoming cars coming from quite a ways.

EDIT: Here's that turn.

Just last night I was on my way home from a party on US1 doing maybe 60mph. I will admit that I was completely sober but not completely awake. I noticed that a part of the road ahead was darker than the rest of the road but could not see why. All of a sudden I see a car heading directly toward me, in the exact same lane as me, except traveling in the wrong direction and with all the lights off. I swerved to the right and missed him, thankfully. It was pretty damn close. Needless to say I was wide awake the rest of the time.
