I 'outgrew' the Bassman and got a Twin Reverb from the first year or two of silverface amps. In retrospect should have kept the Bassman, but at that time it was about volume and more volume.

I wish I kept one of the Deluxe Reverbs. Sold all the Fenders. Only kept the Mesa Boogie Mark III, 65 Amps London and Blues Jr. Still got all the Thorn guitars though. |

And in keeping with this thread, I've got enough hearing loss to play them to the point of rattling shit without pain.

As a sound guy, I always did battle with the lead guitarist. We played small bars and they insisted that their fancy amp needed to be up at 11 to get the right distortion sound. Whatever. Then they bitched when they couldn't hear the monitors. Then they wouldn't wear in ear monitors because they couldn't hear their amp. And drummers were 10x worse. "I have to hit the piccolo snare that hard otherwise it screws up my rhythm." And yes, they were all deaf. And they sounded like shite in the audience because it was way too f'ing loud and you couldn't hear the vocals over the lead guitar and drums. Idiots.

I play the Blues Jr mostly at home at about 1-2 volume. It is a small den area but still, loud as hell in that space. |

And, in my case as an old AND retired guy, my fuzzy eyes see a 6 and think it is an 8, and I think, "Crap, I overslept and I'm late for work." When, in fact, I don't work any more and when I get up doesn't matter. And then, I fall back asleep and dream about being late for work. |

Is why I got out of a band in my teens, sold my Strat and amp, and bought an acoustic Martin and never looked back. I enjoy watching live shows if the sound person has any say, but battling egos and stupidity resulting in horrible sound. |

The interesting thing I found is that the good/great guitarists and drummers never had an issue with stage volume and were really fun to work with to get great sound out to the audience. It was only the crappy ones that had to play at 11 and bash the drums with 2B sticks.

LMAO! The first time you fake it because you are tired - you give up all pretenses of being a young buck.

A bit behind the curve here, tough nuggums.
I did the long version of In-Gadda-Da-Vida in a band in high school. It was our signature piece. I was lead guitar. I wasn't great but I wasn't horrible. Played a Gibson Thunderbird through a Fender Super Reverb (with tubes) and Vox wahwah pedal. |
