It's like investing in Budweiser a week after prohibition ended in 1933.

So, tell me about converting my IRA into gold coins. Do I get to have the coins in my possession? Or is it the same as any other "investment" where all I get is a piece of paper saying I have some gold somewhere. What happens when the proverbial fan is struck?

Market is due for a correction. It's been far too long. If I were you I'd look into Lending Tree or something like that until the pull back and then maybe dip in.

I used to invest heavily in the market a few years ago but I pulled everything out to reinvest with my businesses. I agree the few years I was in I made great money but no better investment that in your self IMO.

Define "far too long".

I read "experts" predicting doom and gloom back in early 2017...good thing I didn't listen.

I still stand by the old adage - invest in good, growth stock mutual funds with long and proven track records that consistently beat the S&P500. Invest at least 15% of your gross income and keep at it for the long run. Nice and boring, nothing fancy, and you will become a millionaire in due time. Through many interviews and surveys, this is still the number one recommendation from real world millionaires in the USA.

Don't try and beat the market. The market is already reacting to information long before you know about it.

Does anyone here play around with individual stocks? Many years ago, I did that and did well...but got out of it. I've recently got back into it, not talking retirement money or main investments. Right now the E-trade account is just over $20K and is up 66% thanks to Visa being up 829%, FB up 306% and Netflix up 251%. Apple and Microsoft also are good.

I have 12 stocks going and the only loser is Snapchat which is at half. Mind you, I have used this account somewhat for fun...in the past have went for risky stuff and lost but overall have gained well.

Anybody have serious ideas of companies to research? What I find fun is being able to make a few hundred bucks every couple weeks, but most of what I have is long term.

I am a member of the Motley Fool and like looking into stuff.

Maybe someone has ideas....A long time ago when the bubble was going, I told a friend Oracle was looking promising--he put a couple thousand in and pulled out in two weeks pocketing a $1000 profit.

And I also play lottery tickets.

If you are just doing it for fun, with no plan to count on the returns making you wealthy, look into FOREX trading.

I found this to be much more entertaining than regular company stocks, as it involves many other attributes, including political events, and global economies. Returns can also be decent if you know what you are doing.

The market we're in is now the longest bull market ever. Ever.

We're slated to become the longest economic expansionary cycle, as well. At some point the economy will shrink and the market will correct in the neighborhood of 20+%. Not this year or next, I don't think....but, 2020 the risk starts to perk up.

There's always risk, but you can't time it. Just keeping buying if it drops.

Many people sold in 2012 because the market started "struggling" and have tried to get back in since, declaring THIS would be the big decline...

No one knows. I do know I want to own stocks over time and declines just give me another chance to own more.
