I was just out driving my M5 and it sounds so sweet! No way I am going for an electric M5. I hope BMW calls it a Super i5 and give it 1000 hp and let some other ex-Tesla drivers buy it.

I learned how to drive with manual transmission. It was great. My very first car was a Honda Accord, stick shift. I taught my friends to drive stick, since I was pretty much the only guy in high school who knew how to drive the damn thing. My first BMW was stick. My first M was a stick. Eventually, SMG came out. I thought I would hate it, but you know what? It shifted faster than I could! With a lot of power. Then turbos came out, and the cars became automatic. Then they became AWD. I thought I would hate it, but you know what? They made driving easier, faster, and safer.

Will I miss the pops and bangs of my ICE cars that I've had now 2/3 of my life? Yes. Will I miss the wurblewurblewurble when I start the car, scaring all my neighbors? Yes.

But you know what? That's like me missing the old days of going to Blockbuster and renting a VHS of the non-edited version of Star Wars. Fond memories, sure, but you gotta change with the time. Believe me, you can have the loud car you want, and smile when you hear your pops and bangs, because I won't hear them since I'll be half a mile down the road before you manage to get your car in second gear, since you're burning your rear tires with your 650hp RWD, assuming you don't miss your shift into third because that much power is going to be crazy on your clutch.

I can pretty much guarantee that any of us here who can afford the car will be in line to get the all electric, because we want looks, we want performance, we want safety, we want luxury at the end of the day.

I hear you. But I am not going to own an electric performance car, because I need the visceral thrill and the sound. The fist and fury. Not the mad horsepower and torque. Our road system would never let us enjoy speeds where rocket launches matter anyway.

This is why folks still love their M3s and M2s. I understand the change to electric tech but will have no part in it. A hybrid may be a good compromise - that's about it.

Hybrid with the ability to drive in EV mode.. give it 50 miles of range and it would address a lot of issues on the emission standpoint.

That’s where I’m at. A 600-700hp v8, same power plant as now, plus a kers system similar to F1 kers. That would only add around 70kg and I believe nearly all or all of that could be cut somewhere. That’s what the M5CS should be.

Even if Tesla is late on production, they'll likely already have a 2024 i5M-killer in the Roadster and Model S Plaid hitting the roads.

The major manufacturers look at profits and the ability to sell. EVs still make up global sales of less than 5%. The battery tech and EV charging infrastructure aren't there for them to go 100% in. Dollar per Dollar and pound per pound ICE engines are still the top choice.

Best of both worlds and probably way cheaper than investing in full lineups of EV cars as batteries/charging is the limiting factor.

I'm not a big EV guy but at the end of the day, any M will get buried from a performance perspective if they don't integrate EV tech and/or offer a full EV option. My M5 is a tuned rocket but on the street maneuvering through traffic, there's no way to keep up with one of those crappy little model 3s. To each their own.

IMO it's never purely about raw speed or acceleration when I get an M car or ride in one. If I had looked for pure performance, I would look at better choices including modded cars. The M5 has the right ingredients for the complete performance experience - great performance but also the exhaust, balance, handling, etc. The ICE is an indispensable part of that equation. I need to hear that roar, the discernible vibration of the chassis, when I accelerate because it connects my senses to the car.

Sure the EV era is coming and I'm sure there will be wide adoption, especially if taxes and laws shove them down our throats. But there will always be detractors and folks who will avoid them as much as they can. I won't be in line for the 2030 model 5000 hp EV M5 either.

We will see when that day arrives. Back in the F10 forum I still remember people complaining how M5 going AWD and auto box will be the end, but now people loved it.

Maybe going electric really will be the end for some enthusiasts but I wouldn't be surprised if people change their opinion again.

2024's all-electric M5

The zero-emission M5, meanwhile, is a member of the CLAR WE family. Power will be provided by Gen V pouch-type batteries. Although BMW knows that it would have been wiser to switch to larger Tesla-style round cells for safety, stability and performance reasons, it is now too late for such a radical change. The most potent conventional energy cell in question is rated at 135kWh; it can be hooked up to a 400V charger good for up to 350kW. In a second step, BMW will upgrade to the 800V standard pioneered by Porsche with its Taycan.

BMW is openly working on a ‘power BEV’, using a 5-series mule. That model has three e-motors borrowed from the powertrain we’ll see in the electric i4 and the iNext SUV. One drives the front axle while the rear wheels get a motor each. Numbers? 711bhp and sub-3.0sec 0-62mph.

F90 M5 side

The maximum projected WLTP range is 435miles, the targeted 0-62mph acceleration time is 2.9sec. In terms of power output, internal documents suggest two 250kW motors driving the rear wheels and one 250kW unit propelling the fronts. That's 750kW or around 1000bhp in total – that may sound awesome, but it will in less than twelve months be eclipsed by Tesla's tri-motor Plaid configuration.

electric 7-series mule

The halo car, which was expected to be based on the Vision M Next concept, has been canned.

Given the electric M5's use of the CLAR WE architecture, there will be commonality with other zero-emission models from BMW Group. BMW has already been spotted testing the CLAR WE platform via some 7-series mules (above).

This extends to the 7-series eDrive out in 2023 and, eventually, the current Phantom which goes electric in very small numbers starting in 2022. A silent Cullinan is due to follow in 2027.

Former F90/G80/F82/F10/E90 owner here and previous anti EV guy. My current daily is a Ram 2500 diesel which is not exactly a save the planet choice. To those saying they won't ever switch, I was with you until my wife got one. Now ICE cars feel antiquated. They are great as a weekend toy, but my next daily will be EV 100%. And yes we have done long trips in her EQS before anyone wants to bring up charging infrastructure.

Also having driven the XM which is a preview of the next gen M5 drivetrain, I hated it. BMW's integration between battery and ICE is abysmal and I have almost zero interest in driving it. Only caveat is if they bring over the wagon, then I will look again but otherwise no thanks.
