Faster charging,...less battery capacity needed in terms of cells! Also, the range of BEVs will surely vary as one may be able to select several different power levels. For instance, lets take a 1200Hp BEV M3,...or M5 and the BMW engineers allows for no less than some 5 to 7 different power levels!
As in:
100% = 1200Hp —-> 300 miles
90% = 1080Hp —-> 330 miles
75% = 900Hp —-> 375 miles
60% = 720Hp —-> 420 miles
50% = 600Hp —-> 450 miles
35% = 420Hp —-> 495 miles
25% = 300Hp —-> 525 miles

Naturally, the lower the power output level, the lower the power consumption, the higher the range!

I'd think this would be easy-peasy coding for BEVs!
I was comparing it to ultra fast EVs. I'm certain a tuner or even OEM like Porsche could for the price of entry of a Rimac, develop an ICE car that would. Folks can reliable tune a M3 to 1,000hp.

If Dodge/Ford/GM all have crate 1,000hps motors hanging around which run reliable I'm certain others could produce. But again use case.

There is no 1800hp EV that is affordable for normal people. You have 90k Plaid or next up Challenger hellcat. I don't call a 1650 a month for 60m at 6% affordable for the average .

Agree it's super easy to throw power into an EV and make them fast. But what you can't fix is everything else outside of the speed or at least yet.

Also the problem with all these fast cars is it not really usable 90% of the time. Dynamically you can only brake and take a corner so fast. A quarter mile of 9 seconds at 153mph vs a 11.0 at 120 is dramatic, never mind the braking system needed to hall down from 150... Quickly and repeatedly. Picture a 1200hp m3 awd on an auto cross track that's a quarter mile...

All for max range in an EV

Well. I was called boomer. But what makes you think I have to explain myself here ? If you red the whole thing this was in context with EVs. Not Bmw in general. Now. I have 3 BMW’s. I like them a lot. I will also gladly point every single f**k up they commit.

All EVs will be fast but the battle will be won by the ones with the best chassis, suspension and handling system design and tuning.

Fair enough, a performance EV that bests all previous BMW ‘ring speeds is an outlier. What does it mean for the mainstream public road driver? Very little, I’d have thought. Who buys their daily drive on the basis of the ‘ring performance? I imagine it’s very few. But this relevance / irrelevance applies equally to ICE and EV cars, surely? If you’re after a public road performance experience then it’s nice to see your choice doing well on the ‘ring but you buy it on the basis of a lot more and wider criteria than that. All BMW are doing by tracking their EV is supplementing their buying proposition with a bit of exotic racing sparkle. Like Mercedes do with their F1 cars.

I don’t read into it that they’re saying “You should buy an EV, not a petrol BMW because, look, an EV is our fastest car around the ‘ring”.

Funny how worked up some get about a marketing article that is all hype and nothing else.

BMW “I’ve got this electric M that is amazing and will beat everything in the world.” Car enthusiasts “Can we drive it? Can we see it?” BMW “No it’s just a plan and a test mule. Stop back in 10 years.”

Five pages of comments later…

That’s a very true fact. MB inventory in general is sky high. The EQS isn’t selling. I saw about 15 lined up today when I test drive another x1.

99 of the 163 vehicles in inventory at my local MB store is EQ models. They can't sell them even with gov subsidies and MB incentives.

XMs are not exactly selling like hotcakes either. Tesla’s are selling cause they’re still ahead of competition in terms of drivetrain in that segment even after so many years and what’s more build quality is much improved as well.

I think it unlikely that people buy cars on the basis of how much inventory a dealer has. i.e. If it’s substantial, they don’t buy it, but if it’s minimal they do. Surely, they have a set of requirements, test drive it, look at the purchase and running costs or lease cost, then make a decision? MB have made a wrong strategic decision to move away from the volume market and focus on luxury models and their EV range is simply too expensive for what you get. I don’t see the resulting unsold inventory as proving EVs are generically bad any more than an inventory of unsold ICE cars would prove that ICE is bad. Seems to me that Tesla know how to make cars that people want to buy and MB at present, don’t. And that BMW have done well with the iX which similarly seems to be an EV that people want to buy.

I don't have to. Albert Biermann already did:

Just to be clear, that's the same Albert Biermann who was at BMW for 30 years, including being the head of M. And this is a pre-production prototype Hyundai we're talking about. That's about to get released. By the time it gets released, it will be there.

You are probably in the US. EVs have higher prices already and it's even a tougher sell when you add the current interest rates and the fact that many states don't bother at all with building a reliable charging network. PLUS political polarization has made EVs a political issue in the US, so if you are in a Republican state many would rather walk than drive an EV...

Bring the EVs here! In my province we have a reliable charging network and people eat these cars up. Of course EQEs and EQSs are a tougher sell than other lower cost EVs though, but they still seem to sell well. As an example I see i4s here more often than ICE 4 series.
