How about doing that and carrying a gun. As another poster said earlier, the two are not mutually exclusive.

And you're right, in this case, a gun would have done absolutely nothing. But neither would being an MMA champ or black belt, this guy was totally unaware. All of the pieces together (awareness, skill, weapons, whatever), make a whole. You can't just have skills without being aware, and you can't just have a weapon without having skills and being aware. Only one idiot in the thread said that this is why people should carry, but his statement is naive at best. The reason this guy is dead is because of a few idiots, but he was also not nearly as situationally aware as he should have been apparently. Overall, it's sad that you can't walk down the street today without wondering if a group of people are going to stab/kill/shoot (or apparently punch) you to death.

This would be a best case scenario.
Those kids act without awareness or severity of what they're doing, or of the consequences. They should be punished in special ways. Like many have said, no way most can see anything like that coming, it's just best to be aware it can happen. |

I don't walk anywhere in public with my head buried in my phone. Everyone I encounter in public is a potential threat. Even if I'm at a bar, I'm wired to constantly assess my surroundings. Having a gun is useless without a prepared mindset. A tool is completely and utterly useless if you do not have the skills to wield it effectively. A gun is a tool. Even if my skills are "sharp" and I'm ambushed by two guys with knives, my bare hands aren't going to do much unless I'm a martial arts master. If my skills are "sharp" and I'm ambushed by two guys with guns, I better have a gun if I want to have any chance at all.

When my mom picked me up, she asked if I would like to be held down on the ground so all my classmates could line up and take a turn at kicking me in the stomach. It was a pretty good deterrent for me, i even had nightmares about that happening. The visual is still sharp in my mind. Maybe they get the same punishment while being in jail. Find the largest and most violent prisoner and make sure he knocks those fuckers out at least once a week for a year. I'm pretty sure they won't do that shit again. If they do, just put them down; no need to waste any more toilet paper on them.

Situational awareness and keeping your guard up is one thing, but that seems a little extreme unless you are wandering around some pretty hostile environment.

Based on crime statistics alone you can determine who is more of a potential threat and who is less of a potential threat. 18 - 24 year old males are much more of a threat than 18 - 24 year old females for example. But all are still potential threats. I do the same thing. Always scanning people around me for trouble.

And like my friend explains below, the key word is potential. Quote:

You're right, "potential" is the key word but the level of threat does make more sense now that I think about it. Walking around downtown Denver, there are definitely some shady individuals and groups of people that I pass by. These are the people I'm keeping an eye out for as most other pedestrians don't register as a potential threat to me. I suppose the threat level of those other pedestrians has been too low for me to worry about, so I ignore them.

the trouble is that as a 30 or more year old adult, you may not view high schoolers for for their full threat potential. I remember being in high school and the thought of arguing with an adult was taboo, let alone assaulting one. Since i thought that way back then, my first assumption is that they think the same as i did, which they clearly don't.
