There's a reddit subforum called "justice porn" that I think you guys would love.

(Note: Obviously this isn't actually porn )

How about doing that and carrying a gun. As another poster said earlier, the two are not mutually exclusive.

It's not more valuable, it's just different. Everything you mentioned is all an important part of being defensive. As was said earlier, a gun is just another layer of defense.

And you're right, in this case, a gun would have done absolutely nothing. But neither would being an MMA champ or black belt, this guy was totally unaware. All of the pieces together (awareness, skill, weapons, whatever), make a whole. You can't just have skills without being aware, and you can't just have a weapon without having skills and being aware.

Only one idiot in the thread said that this is why people should carry, but his statement is naive at best. The reason this guy is dead is because of a few idiots, but he was also not nearly as situationally aware as he should have been apparently.

Overall, it's sad that you can't walk down the street today without wondering if a group of people are going to stab/kill/shoot (or apparently punch) you to death.

This would be a best case scenario.

Those kids act without awareness or severity of what they're doing, or of the consequences. They should be punished in special ways. Like many have said, no way most can see anything like that coming, it's just best to be aware it can happen.

People like me that carry guns and train extensively with them have a level of situational awareness that is much higher than your average, non-gun-carrying civilian.

I don't walk anywhere in public with my head buried in my phone. Everyone I encounter in public is a potential threat. Even if I'm at a bar, I'm wired to constantly assess my surroundings.

Having a gun is useless without a prepared mindset. A tool is completely and utterly useless if you do not have the skills to wield it effectively. A gun is a tool.

Even if my skills are "sharp" and I'm ambushed by two guys with knives, my bare hands aren't going to do much unless I'm a martial arts master.

If my skills are "sharp" and I'm ambushed by two guys with guns, I better have a gun if I want to have any chance at all.

When i was in 1st grade i got in a tussle with a kid and kicked him in the stomach when he was on the ground.

When my mom picked me up, she asked if I would like to be held down on the ground so all my classmates could line up and take a turn at kicking me in the stomach. It was a pretty good deterrent for me, i even had nightmares about that happening. The visual is still sharp in my mind.

Maybe they get the same punishment while being in jail. Find the largest and most violent prisoner and make sure he knocks those fuckers out at least once a week for a year. I'm pretty sure they won't do that shit again. If they do, just put them down; no need to waste any more toilet paper on them.

Situational awareness and keeping your guard up is one thing, but that seems a little extreme unless you are wandering around some pretty hostile environment.

The key word is potential. When you consider that each person is a different LEVEL of threat as well, it makes more sense.

Based on crime statistics alone you can determine who is more of a potential threat and who is less of a potential threat. 18 - 24 year old males are much more of a threat than 18 - 24 year old females for example. But all are still potential threats.

I do the same thing. Always scanning people around me for trouble.

My goal is not to kick them while they're down for fun - it's to to stop them from continuing the attack as happened in the video - it could have ended badly for the 1 vs 2.
If someone is on the ground and/or not moving there's no reason to attack them further..
Dat said, I must have poor choices in bitches if they aren't on the same page as me..

Not really. In this world we have little kids going around knocking defenseless people out. Nothing seems a little extreme to me anymore.

And like my friend explains below, the key word is potential.

You're right, "potential" is the key word but the level of threat does make more sense now that I think about it. Walking around downtown Denver, there are definitely some shady individuals and groups of people that I pass by. These are the people I'm keeping an eye out for as most other pedestrians don't register as a potential threat to me. I suppose the threat level of those other pedestrians has been too low for me to worry about, so I ignore them.

yeah, last time i was in Denver, i was scanning a mile a minute. Many many shady looking individuals on 16th street. Most are likely benign enough. But man, my eyes were all over the place!

the trouble is that as a 30 or more year old adult, you may not view high schoolers for for their full threat potential. I remember being in high school and the thought of arguing with an adult was taboo, let alone assaulting one. Since i thought that way back then, my first assumption is that they think the same as i did, which they clearly don't.
