Oh well, keeps her happy and she never complains about what I spend.

We make about 170k but our house (previous foreclosed house we gutted) is only $575 a month and we have no kids. I have 7 cars and all but one is paid off and the newest is an 2011 with low miles. Could I afford something nicer, sure, but I like older cars and enjoy working on them. I've always thought about selling them all and buying something newer and nicer, would love a Evora, but I never actually pull the trigger. Plus I like the fact that if something ever happened I know we can just off load them.
Cheapest thing you buy is the actual horse . What kinds does she own?

Having nice cars doesn't mean anything. I have a friend who "owns" a new truck every year, meaning he leases the thing with probably 3/4 of his paycheck.

I'm also of the opinion that you don't "own" anything unless you possess the title. Many people are about keeping up with the Jones' and live in a mountain of debt to do so. Sure, there are some very wealthy people who like nice stuff, but most of the "actually" wealthy people, at least around here, are smart with their money. One of my clients is a multi-millionaire. He dresses casually and drives a 2000's Toyota Tundra, but he isn't a car enthusiast.

Horses are uber-expensive to own. There is a farm at the end of my street that breeds thoroughbred show horses. They have an enormous barn, a man-made 3 acre pond, and about 70 acres of that white fence that costs about $200 a section. Nicest people in the world, but I can only imagine what it costs to run an operation like that.

Those richest in life can find the fine line between want, need and their disposable income and out of this form contentment. Life isn’t about the accumulation of wealth and things, lest you have lost its meaning. It’s about experiences and who you choose to share them with. Most often we monitize to varying degrees a financial sum for the trade of time and skills, but, here’s where all nearly 8 billion on earth have equal wealth, time. Don’t waste it, and certainly don’t waste it worrying about anyone else and what they have.

I no longer show as adulting and parenting has gotten in the way. My last show was in September of 2017 and my horses (knock on wood) are as healthy as a horse which is the dumbest saying in the world as horses physically cannot throw up, so they basically die instead of being able to throw up and relieve themselves thanks to colic.

With all that combined, I'm very lucky to have healthy horses and no show expenses.

In case you cared I used the Google machine

So where does the saying healthy as a horse come from? It has everything to do with biological makeup of the animals. Horses have 4 times number of white blood cells as compared to human beings. A pint of horse blood and a pint of human blood can easily depict the rich protection in horses. Also, horses are strong. Typically, strength is associated with good health hence the saying.

I used to ride through there on one of my sport bikes. The curvy roads are awesome along with the scenery. I don't do it anymore because traffic is a mess so I putter along. And there are way too many potholes for me to rail around it safely on two wheels.

They must have fixed all the pot holes. I never saw a single one and I traveled that road weekly, but during rush hour the traffic is bad

Thanks good to know. It was bad between the entrance to the Great Falls Park all the way down to Swinks Mill. And VDOT needed to fix those holes as they were pretty bad.

Pre-Covid and eliminating deliveries, the standard was, "You go into your house and I'll go into mine and we will see who has to come out first."

This was an allusion to those who have high incomes vs those who have self-replicating, and/or multigenerational wealth.

Covid has changed this slightly but not all that much.

Hence the term, "The Idle Rich."

This is like 90% of the USA lol... we would not currently have a housing supply crisis if those that shouldn't didn't actually buy things way over their head.

True, the horse isn't the biggest cost. I figured it up once and each one costs us almost 200k over its life, that's just to keep it alive and healthy. Add on training, lessons, vet bills, shows etc and I prefer not to know the total. Same way I don't want her to add all my cars and parts up.
She owns a foundation reg. Morgan, Arab and a cart pony. I really enjoy the cart pony, acts like a dog and is an absolute saint to drive. Oh and she did have a draft as well but recently sold it, shame too because I liked that horse and I could actually ride it. Like they say in ads "horse hubby safe", that makes the horse sell quick! She said it didn't have enough fire for her taste. Her focus is on Dressage and Hunter.

She and I would get along! I’m a hunter/jumper. I’ve never tried dressage but we have a dressage boarder. I rode and have shown Western Pleasure for about 15 years before switching to hunter and then finally to jumping. My daughter keeps asking for a pony. I’ve thought about a welsh cob but as you know, it’s a 20-30 year commitment. Might as well just get a regular sized horse in 5 years when she’s old enough to care for it unsupervised. In the interim, she just rides one of mine.

Ive had my oldest for 22 years this August 12th. My second I’ve had 17 years this May 31st. My third (we don’t know her age or much about her) she was a free adoption as her owners were killed in a horrific head on collision with a tractor trailer. The family was giving away all the horses, so I took one. Had her since 2008. My 4th was another freebie, an old senior Grey Arab mare who was lame and skinny. She needed a good home to live out her days. This was in 2007 and I put her down February 22, 2015. She’s buried under her favorite oak tree. Didn’t expect to have her 8 years but I’m glad I was able to give her a happy long retirement.

If you have expensive hobbies, date/marry a horse woman and she’ll never complain about how much you spend.

Guns, golf, cars, and motorcycles - they’re expensive, sure, but as evidenced above they barely hold a candle to the costs of a serious horse hobby.
