Good friend who I trust told me that he knows a handful of people who blew their motors on stock new STIs... Thoughts?

Yeah John, heard they were running lean from the factory and a good tune is essential.

I have heard the same thing. It is ringlands failing. It is pretty random though happening in both stock and tuned cars. On the other hand, most people are not having problems. We have our HPFP's they have their ringlands.

This became a problem starting with the '07 STIs. There is tons of info about this on the subaru forums.

Another reason why the '04-'06 STi's are still the best.

The motor hasn't really changed from 04-06, they changed pistons but thats it. The stock tune can easily be changed...

They got different heads on the 07 and then the GR got variable timing on the exhaust cam, plus slightly different turbos. But yeah, the 07+ engine failures are usually because of the stock tune fail.

I heard it's particularly worse in California with 91 octane.

Love the STi, I use to own an 05. I just saw the newer ones the other day and they look uglier imo compared to the 04-07.

An automatic one in a nice shade of primer apparently does.

I dig both generations of US STi's and had quite a bit of fun with a buddy's 2005 for a few weeks while my car was in the shop. If you haven't driven one, you might very well not understand.
