I believe you have to build up a muscle memory to get the red dot back into your sight picture quickly on follow up shots. Conversely, the front sight is always easy to see and track. So yeah, you can see the front sight through the RMR, but now you have to focus on the red dot and your target. Bang, now you change your focus on the front sight in order to find the red dot quickly and once you do, you have to transition to the red dot and your target. For me personally, i'm much more proficient on follow up shots and quick target acquisition with standard sights. The RMR is cool, fun to shoot with and likely a useful tool with enough practice. But i've been kicking the idea of selling it around.

Took me 8 years to finally replace the rubber grips on my Kimber 1911. Not sure why I waited this long. lol

A pistol with doctor sight or other red dot aim looks riced, but thats my opinion.

I love the setup but like you said, it takes time to be an expert with it. |

Sights on handguns are great for when you've already drawn your weapon. Target acquisition takes a bit more time for me with optics than the good old sights. I think I just need to get used to it. |

The only thing you need to do is get back up iron sights and start shooting. Take an carbine class at your local range to get familiar with it and get the fundamentals of shooting it down. If you want to and seeing as you went with DD as your first AR, you can likely afford one, a quality Red Dot Sight would be in order. Aimpoint micro 2moa is a very robust small red dot that fits with the light weight theme of your M4v7. You could also go with the Magpul MBUS sights to keep with the light weight theme.

I have a stupid question. At least I'm fairly certain it is stupid.
Silencers are not legal up here, so I've only had the opportunity to shoot a suppressed 1911 in the States, and that was only once. So I'm not that familiar with them. But as I understand it, the basic principles of a silencer are a set of baffles / ports within the silencer tube which allows the gas to dissipate / expand into, which reduces the sound the gun makes. In a nutshell. Idle curiousity here - if you were to wrap / encase a muzzle brake in steel / etc - would it then basically serve the same function as a suppressor? In practice, yes, who would do this, but just idle curiosity on my part. I'm not planning on doing any such thing to my own. |
