I'm not sure that the case - I think the more plausible answer is the the EU has strict penalties if carmakers fail CO_2 emission standards, so BMW (and others) need to sell BEVs there or pay fines. And they just can't build enough to also satisfy the US market.

Well, and the fact that it would need to be imported and the range isn't so great for rural America etc.

Yes.

This car is kinda funny on paper: it's an M4 with one unique option, which is where all the 3.0 specific changes roll into.

What unique option is that?

Added G90 SOP and the existence and SOP of G99 M5 Touring.

First news about the replacements for X5/X6/X7 and Neue Classe production at SLP. (These bits are courtesy of another reader - please raise your hand if you don't want to remain anonymous, you totally deserve credit for original research.)

Very interesting, thank you.

So, mass-market cars (3 series, X3) will get the BEV-only Neue Klasse.
This also fits with latest board communication.

1 year ago, Frank Weber (Head of Development) still said, Neue Klasse will cover each future car, from 1 series to X7. So, you see, there was a lot of discussion and strategy questions.

Is there still enough time to federalize the G61/G99 for the us market if they change their mind?

In their latest M video on YouTube, they said that station wagons still don't generate too much interest/volume in the US.

This is the reason why there aren't any tourings. And this leads to the fact that they do not offer the new G81 M3 Touring. There could be enough demand, but the homologation is quite expensive because the base car (G21) is not offered in the US. This shows the enormous costs due to bureaucracy.

Interesting. BMW has said 2025 SOP for the first of the Neue Klasse cars at the new Debrecen plant – has this been delayed, or is production at SLP just starting later?

That bit was about the SLP plant specifically. I don't know the official production start dates of those models yet.

So does that mean that there will be no more ICE 3er/4er after the current model, or just that those won't be produced at SLP? Kinda big difference...

The SLP situation tells us how BMW sees the future North American volume sales. Higher end and/or lower volume models -

When is the hybrid G99 planned to be produced?

While you were sleeping, EU decreed a mandate of 50% emissions reduction in 2030 and 100% emissions reduction in 2035

There is no reason to develop hybrids that they can't sell in the EU.

Unless they quickly plonk the XM drive train into the G99 and sell it tomorrow

(what's the difference between "regular hybrid" and "phev"?)

I guess the answer is: whatever will be on the XM, let's wait till that launches. But I think everybody assumes V8 + PHEV.
