They'll only mention it if they see it in the carpark, most businesses in Auckland have dedicated carparks for their business and visitor carparks. Here is an example, their guest carparks are on the right of the carpark where the Skoda wagon is, right in front of their office. The warehouse on the other side of the building is where the rest of the staff park. The closest car park is right next to their boardroom as well But they seem to like cars and don't think we are expensive because of the car, they seem to think it is an indicator of success.

Many years ago my wife (now ex-wife, who worked at an OB-GYN clinic) drove my slope nose Porsche to work. When the doctor/owner came in he was walking around looking for another doctor (visitor).... when he finally asked who was there to visit, the staff replied nobody. He continued to look, and when the staff asked why he thought there was someone there to visit, he asked who drove the Porsche. He was a tool. Back in the day when people asked, it bothered me so I just brushed it off. Anyway, I don't really get asked much anymore, but when I do, as I spend most of my day out in the yard, I reply John Deere. Fast forward a few decades and a new life, my track car was a 3.6 Turbo and my wifes track car was a 993 RS clone. When we would take her car to a club function, or any social gathering, people would talk to me about her car. At times to a point where I would have to say, talk to her, it's her car and excuse myself to go get a drink. |

Typically I'll just say a bmw or a bmw 335i unless they ask more. As I generally don't want people to think I'm stuck up or some rich guy(I'm not). However if they're into cars or have seen it and ask I'll usually go into more detail

Always "e92 M3". If they know e92 then we can talk further, if they know m3 then it's enough of a descriptor and if they don't know either, then it doesn't really matter.

"A little 1 Series" follow up with "BMW" if they look confused.
Then have to continue on to describe the 1 series, years it was sold in the US, etc, cause too many casual (non-car people) don't really know or haven't ever heard of a 1 Series. |

I just say "a little 3 series sedan". I like staying under the radar. The M3 can be a flex to some and a regular car to others, rather not venture in my personal life.

Haha it's always "don't you care about reliability and keeping the car forever?"
My daily is a Lexus IS and while it's a good car, it's maybe 60-70% as good a car as the E90 was back in the day. They really aren't even in the same conversation when it comes to anything from powertrain, handling, interior quality, overall solidity, etc. I've owned it for the past 6 years due to reliability, low cost of ownership, and it being reasonably fun to drive and luxurious; but once my career allows for it I'm going straight back to the Germans.

Non car guy conversation usually goes like:
Person: what car do you drive? Me: A small BMW Person: *eyes light up* A BMW? What kind? Me: Oh just a 128i Person: Oh, I never seen one of those Car guy conversation: Car Guy:what car do you drive? Me: A small BMW Car Guy: what BMW you got? Me: 128i with 6MT Car Guy: Nice! Why didn't you go for a 135i? Me: *Inside my head all I want to answer with is because of reliability* Because I'd get pulled over too much if I went with that car haha

When people ask what i drive, I mostly ignore the question. I know its rarely coming from a good place. The people that know me, don't need to ask that question. The people that don't really know me, are trying to work a prick angle to break balls or make trouble. People are just nasty. I work in a business where everyone on the floor can afford BMWs or better... Kid from a recent analyst class mentioned his BMW in conversation and someone senior overheard.. His name is now BMW, non stop ball breaking for the past 2 years. Point is people always look to break balls over owning one of these cars especially if they can bait you into bragging about it. I hate this thread. |

I find it interesting how many people in this thread actively avoid discussing their cars... Sure, I never bring it up with non-car people, or those I don't know, but I don't feel the need to avoid the topic if it does come up. Not criticising/judging/etc; just an observation. I guess there's generally a lot more judgement or whatever about what your car says about you, mainly in the USA? I guess the other side to it for me is that I visibly do not fit the 'poser' part of the BMW image (I'm always dressed scruffy, never do my hair etc) And if someone wants to pass judgement on me based on my choice of car, it's a quick way for me to work out that I don't need to spend any further time with them.
