Makes me want to buy a fast super tele. Great angle on that one.

Kevin, it takes a little practice to work with a super-T, but it's worth it and it does feel like your cheating vs. "ordinary" lenses. I highly recommend one if you've got use for it.

I just like the superior IQ of the fast big white. My 300/4 is close but still far off from those. I just have to decide 300,400 or 500 but my wide end/zoom is seriously lacking and I need to fix that first.

Saving for a 500mmf4 here....maybe by this fall for the next migration season. Until then, my 400 still brings in some decent shots.

Do you usually crop with the 400 then?

Oh yeah, very much so. How much depends on how good the shot was, but I can usually get away with 50% on my newer bodies.

I'd love a 500mm f4 IS. The dilemma is that I love my wife more and the two won't coexist peacefully in the same house.

I guess that would qualify for the 500 then. Otherwise I would think the faster 400.

Mark,
Get lens, get box, put lens in box and cover with towel. Get kitten(s) and put them in box.
"Honey, look what I brought home, can I keep them?"

"well, you said I can keep them." problem solved

I'll bypass the 500 f4 if we can skip more cats in this house. (As I look over at one making a racket in a cardboard box.)

Cat is looking for that 500 and a playmate. Why don't you have camera in hand? Cat/box is very entertaining.
Gobi went to Tony LaRussas ARF and was adopted within a few days. That is the same Tony La Russa as St. Louis and Oakland.

The 300/2.8L IS, combined with a 1.4X and 2.0X TC is pretty darn good. It's by no means "cheap", but it's speed and IQ is right there close to the 500/4.0L IS.

Still, I'm anxious to get the firmware update that allows the 5D3 to AF at f/8. I know that it'll be slow and a battle to keep a BIF in focus (it's already tough enough operating at f/5.6), but avoid a severe crop usually trumps MTF charts when working with super-teles.

Almost every bird that you see from me has be seriously cropped, even most of those taken at 700mm.

Even though F8 will be slower I think the increase in keepers and sharpness will be worth it to you. I never realized how great a difference in sharpness there was until using my lenses up in Yosemite @ wide,F8 and F32. The difference was considerable where I thought previously it wouldn't be that noticeable.

Agreed. Proof that a kit lens can produce great images. Well done, Kev.

@ $40 too.
Which is why my wide end needs upgrading. Luckily crappy lenses don't show as many defects at the wide end as standard and up. The only problem is that those UWA fast lenses don't give me any return on investment. It will be either the 17-55,15-85 or the 16-35
Not that anything I have bought does anyway ;-)

I have the Tamron 17-50 2.8 non-VC. Works for what I need it to do. Nice and sharp. Cheap, too.
