The G87 M2 was the last new model with only an ICE. Everything that is to come has either a hybrid or fully electric powertrain.

When the G80 was released, the comments were just as negative as they are for the M5. Especially due to the front design. But, once the G80 was released in the US, people couldn’t run fast enough to get in line for one. Every dealer had a 12 person wait list. Dealers had no idea when they would get allocations. The same thing is going to happen here. This thing will sell and dealers will have long wait lists. And wait till the wagon is released. 80-90% people out there aren’t the hardcore enthusiasts that are on this forum. Heavy or not, it’s going to sell.

Some interesting insights from M exterior designer who worked with vision M next and M2 exterior design. That's why it has feeling, that M5 ir a big brother of M2 in terms of design.

I’m ok with the electrification, but one would think if BMW is going to add 1,000lbs to the car it would add more than 100hp…it literally seems to be missing 300hp. This car with 1,000hp would make sense.
In all reality, downpipes, intake and a tune will get you more than 700hp out of the F90. Very confusing direction by BMW. |

I can’t believe bmw did not learn their lesson on xm. Car does not sell at all. Even with 20k incentives they can not move any of them
Instead they double down and make a sedan version of that Suvs outsell sedans 10 to 1 at least in usa, so what sales are we talking about? One does not need to wait to drive m5. Just go drive an xm. Every review said its crap. Slow and cumbersome and overcomplicated. So why bother when you can buy x5m for 30k less? M division gives their best shot on xm and its slower than Audi sq8 in both acceleration and braking (not even rsq8) So - same with m5 - they make a car that is slower than m3 and is 40k more? Who is the target market? Definately not bmw enthusiast who have been loyal to the brand and buying it for 30 years. I know - i am out |

I hope you are wrong. Either way, I just picked up another G82 because I’m concerned you may be right. This way I can avoid the next generation M3/4.

Worse power to weight ratio than the F90. That was to expect but still a bummer. Will be going with the X5M+tune for the next 3 years.

I don't have any issues with this car outside of the weight... in the end, weight makes everything worse... I think the exterior and interior are fine as is even the 720 hp powertrain... but I don't see it performing that well due to a worse power to weight than the predecessor... 5400 lbs is really offensive and the car will NEED that much more power to keep up with an F90... Why make this a plug in instead of a lighter normal hybrid with a smaller battery that weighs less? If this isn't a 10.5 @ 130 1/4 mile vehicle... then I don't know what to say in terms of 2024 performance...

Yeah. I saw a new X3M at my dealer with Hankooks on it. My buddy (sales manager) said that BMW is now fitting all kinds of brands that were previously deemed unacceptable.

These are not F1 cars. Those batteries are very small and they don't use much buffer. A modern performance-oriented PHEV (or most any for that matter) doesn't empty the battery when you run out of EV-only range. It just doesn't let you use any more for that, but will still feed power in all the time. My wife has a Cayenne Hybrid and even after it says "EV Mode unavailable" it still will stop the engine at a light, power off the first 10-15 MPH in electric only, and feed electric power in when you hammer the throttle. There is no difference in performance and you can see what the powertrain is doing on the display. I understand you concern, but I can tell you lack experience here. Please know that it's not really an issue in anything but the most extreme use. Hell, Matt Farah lapped a Panamera Turbo S EHybrid a few years ago and came back with MORE battery than when he started. Remember, the engine charges the battery under regen, and also can charge it using the engine's power on the overrun. So your assertation is not correct. |

Am I missing something?
G90 M5 0-60 3.4s G80 M3 0-62 3.5s So they’re the same acceleration, both with be quicker as we see G80s run quicker times and thus so we assume will the G90 but it not really a ‘big brother’ and halo saloon gap in performance. I’m sure there’s much more to it and many have already commented this, not reading all 5 pages sorry

How will they do a CS ICE version without making a new chassis and essentially a whole different car? Sounds like cope

pretty sure we can point the blame directly at EU governments imposing ridiculously draconian emissions requirements on automakers across the board. Have to be seen "doing something" and cars/carmakers are an easy target.

In a track, where all you do is to accelerate and regen, surely is possible to keep the battery going, I even managed to almost fully recharge the battery while driving down a long downhill. However, that doesn't meant that you'll be able to drive 300kms and then floor the car and get 700+ HP, unless that BMW is adding some new, clever battery management and some pretty aggressive regen that would allow to do so. If the tech hasn't evolve to those levels, it'll simply won't be possible under normal circumstances, and you'll have a 500+HP car that can, for limited periods of time, give you 700, which is how most hybrid BMWs work.
