I literally used that same phrase. At first it was derogatory, now it’s like a badge of honor!

Had some Lagavulin 16 earlier from a bottle I bought. First I was like “hmmm don’t know if I like this...” finished half a glass and still wasn’t a fan. But then later on I missed it. Will have to drink more tomorrow. Having a glass of Bulleit Rye now (currently my favorite daily besides Monkey Shoulder).

My wife and I watched Zombieland Double Tap last night (seemed appropriate) and we had a couple of Black Bush's, for a $30 whisk(e)y it is tough to beat.

IMO Templeton Rye is very smooth. Redemption Rye is good as well. Both of these are a step up from Bulleit Rye.

I personally think Whistlepig Rye has a good start, but taste like dirt at the finish. I would not recommend.

I would agree on Whistlepig. It has a good start but don’t understand why it’s so expensive. Maybe I’m not used to it. Been wanting to try Templeton (will pass on Redemption for now), Jameson, and some Jim Beam Rye. Will get small bottles next time I go to Total Wine or Costco.

I have some Lagavulin 16. It's for friends. Hate it. But to each their own. Balvenie owns my soul.

Dude lagavulin 16 is not a beginner scotch lol... that is about the peatiest beverage available... its a very very specific taste and you either like it or hate it. The peaty scotch market is about the smallest due to that.

Balvenie, Mac tend to stay on the sweeter lighter side and will appeal to a much larger crowd.

Yes, Lagavulin is a very smooth peaty scotch (truly regal), but there are many rougher or more intense, peatier versions out there. That Laphroaig cask strength is a long time favorite for sure. If you like that, you may want to try Ardbeg Corryvreckan and Bruichladdich heavily peated versions (Port Charlotte is my fav).

Should be enough for few weeks now with 7-8 bottles of whiskey. Lol
Will try others in the future. For now I've narrowed down to Scotch and rye whiskey. Irish is pretty cool but not doing it much for me.

Jack Daniels gets shit on by snobs because it's what we used to pound in High School, but it's actually a damn good whiskey.

It may be mostly a mixer, but even neat it's got good flavor.

ehhhh... gonna have to disagree on that one a bit...

I know it's not a fair comparison but Jack smells like bathroom cleaner next to even a basic $35 Glenlivet Scotch.

If you want to drink Bourbon on a budget, Maker's does the job much better in my opinion and isn't as sugary.

Generally I find that most bourbons are good value compared to Scotches, I got a bottle of the Frank Sinatra edition when I retired and it's quite good, also Gentleman Jack and Single Barrel are good.

However, today is St. Patricks day so it'll be some Bushmills or Powers for me today.

lol at the bathroom cleaner jab.

I like Jack, but it's not my go too when going for something not Scotch. I'd turn down Glenlivet before turning down Jack though... Glenlivet for me is super flat flavor wise. Jack at least has that corn sweetness you get from Bourbon/Tennessee Whiskey.

I'd go Eagle Rare or Buffalo Trace over Jack any day. Makers too!

So I'm learning lol I started out with Single Malt Scotch and only recently branched out into Bourbon.

And just because it's worth pointing out how everyone's taste is different... I did not like the bottle of Woodford I bought and it became a cocktail ingredient rather than my preferred neat or rocks.
