Two years ago in my sophomore year of college I worked at BMW dealership as a driver in the service department. I drove people to work who had dropped off their cars for service, drove for parts, and drove for dealer trades. I met all different kinds of customers while working there. Any preconceived notions or stereotypes about 'BMW drivers' simply are not accurate. No single personality type was dominant. Actually, most were surprisingly friendly considering some were dropping off their cars with problems that shouldn't have been occurring. I suspect that this 'BMW driver stereotype' is a product of a few jerk drivers giving us a bad image and a bit of brand jealousy generated by all the praise given to BMW's in automotive reviews.
I miss driving all those new BMW's! The only reason I quit that job was because I completed my Associates in Ohio and moved to Pittsburgh to get my Bachelors. Fortunately, I only have a year left. Hopefully when I graduate I can afford a lease on an e92! |

lol its cause most of those fools with acura tl's, infiniti g35's, lexus is 350's or some other japanese supposed BMW 3 series competitor buy their car thinking its a a lot cheaper and on paper better. but when they get it, they realize that their car drives like shit, and in a desperate act of incompetence and salvaging of manhood, they hate on our superior, kind of the sport sedan BMW 3 series

I have to admit that the most of BMW owners are somewhat arrogant. Whereas BMW enthusiasts aren't.
I came from Volkswagen community. When I had V-dub, I waved every modified VW i saw. sometimes i get ignored but 90% of time, i get waved back. I liked it. I tried to do the samething right after I switched to BMW. But only 20-30% of them waved me back. After that I get hesitated to do it anymore. Also, some douchebags in BMWs try to race me without even looking at me. They just tailgate me, pass me like crazy but still trying to maintain "gangstar" driving position. Moreovre, after I got my car, non-BMW people also try to race me, rev at me, etc. so I tend to focus on the road when I am driving instead of looking for people who are waving me or cars that I want to wave at. This attitude make other people think I am so ignorant when they try to wave me. oh well..

Perhaps people don't like BMW drivers because of the stereotype image of the BMW-driver :

We are all humans, and most of us are passionate about what we own and the decisions we make.
If you guys scan this forum, you'll find a lot of anti-Lexus, anti-other brands -this very post is a good example of that! Before I owned my BMW, I had a Ford Explorer and I wanted a sports car - I was undecided, and my list of finalists included the BMW 330i, the Lexus IS350, and Mercedes Benz C350 Sport. It was a very hard decision, because they all pros and cons (yes even BMW has cons). At the end I chose BMW - and I'm happy, no regrets. But it was a close competition, I very well could've chose the IS350, and had I done so I'd be posting in a Lexus forum, and very happy about my decision, and justifying how smart I was to have chosen the Lexus. If you're objective, you'll agree... |

I'm not perfect with my words but that is a pet peeve of mine. As far as the person getting out of their car to confront the lady tailing her, that takes some balls! hahah These days (not that I'm old and remember old days) I'd think just about anyone would bust a cap in your ass especially in Jersey! Good on you for getting your point across though. As far as the thread goes, there have been A LOT of good points about why people might not like BMW drivers. For myself I have always been an aggresive (somewhat of an asshole when I feel my cushion has been invaded, well actually a serious asshole) driver, I have never had a BMW before but I have noticed that since I have been getting nicer and faster cars I am more likely just to blow people off. When I had my old 4runner that wasn't worth that much, less than 10K I was willing to ram it into someone if I had to. My Audi that was 30K I wasn't likely to do that, and with this one pushing 50K, definitely not going to. OK I lost my point here, but after writing all this crap I'm not going to delete it. Damn short term memory!

I miss that about my GTI, it felt like everyone with a VW was your friend, didn't even have any mods on it but still got the waves.

IMO, for the chain of German automobile brands that focus on the driver and being one with the machine, BMW is right at the top. The only other brand above would be Porsche. This is not including exotics as most of the population can't afford $120k+ cars.
While Audi/Lexus/MBZ are in the same price category I don't see why people bother comparing them, if your the type of person who understands BMW and buys them for the reason they are built than one wouldn't think twice about the others. Now if your one who just wants a comfy, safe, good driving, etc. vehicle than it's understandable to check all brands out. Of course you will find anti-"brand" as a lot of people here believe their vehicle is better than the competitors, which would you hope since they paid a nice chunk of money for it. Of course the problem is people will rag on another brands without really understanding the differences in mechanical engineering between the both to have a proper discussion. I personally enjoy studying such and BMW is a strong leader when it comes to ingenunity from their engines to suspension designs. Lastly, I think location has a big effect on how your viewed. The 3-series is practically considered basic transporation in so.cal so no one would bother looking at you twice. For that you better have at least an Enzo

THE FACTS ARE:
BMW is a better car then Honda. Most people can not afford a BMW, or because of their fundamental beliefs see no point to spending that much money on a car. This directly causes jealousy, and there is no question about that. |

where i live, no one wants to start a race with me when i am driving my BMW. But the weird thing is, when i drive my 94 Camry, other drivers always pick on me like cutting me off or tailgating. Maybe i drive like a grandma in my BMW, thats why.

It's true.
Funny how they all bash BMW because it's better than their cars. Like on Club Lexus, they'll just pull out the Reliability card. "So what if it's faster and handles better if it's in the shop all the time". Heard similar stuff about RWD Bimmers sucking in snow so people didn't buy it and bought a subaru forester instead. lol |
