First IIHS Semi-Autonomous Testing Fails Nearly Every Automaker

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a6...jB_c_JmGqJuycs

Acceptable? Lexus with Teammate and Advance drive on their LS500h
Marginal? GM Supercruise and suprising Nissan PROPilot

Interesting where the company touting self driving more than anyone else, and likely the originators ended up
Yes, I do realize the testing itself is still flawed and we can pick apart the testing methodology all day long. So interpret how you'd like.

Not surprised. We are entering into a dangerous period where companies are advertising this stuff as "you don't REALLY have to drive" and then saying you do in tiny print so people expect it to be self driving. But we all know these systems aren't very good yet.

Two of the best boondoggles for automotive engineers... powering a car with a big-ass battery and having it drive itself.

Still don’t understand the appeal of this. Why would I want a car to drive itself? Plenty of transportation options if you don’t feel like driving that don’t involve my life in skynet’s hands.

Have you been living under a rock for the last 10 years? Everyone wants to play around with their phone instead of drive. Everyone holding a phone or with those stupid mounts so they can play with their phone while driving. Vast majority now.

Yes I just emerged and the world is quite different now.

If playing with your phone is so important to you, there are plenty of bus/train/cab/uber/lyft options to choose from. I personally do not see the appeal at all of a self driving car nor would I feel comfortable casually scrolling bimmerpost while a bunch of sensors and gps drives me home.

Ok. But considering the vast majority of people are doing it, even here on this site, how do you propose to get the "cat back in the bag"?

Force phone makers to block use of the phone (for data) when moving over 3mph. It can still make phone calls, just no wireless data or any apps that would be considered games, etc. "Wahh but I'm a passenger", I don't care, use a tablet then. And if you're such a jackwagon that you find the need to be on a tablet while driving, just ban that person from holding a license and impound the car.

Be careful what you wish for with this "forcing" business. It wouldn't be very difficult to force carmakers to restrict vehicle speed to the posted speed limit.
