BMW 6 series engine question
Im looking at buying a 2013 650 xDrive with 40k miles for daily driver
I was always told that the bmw V8 engines are known for smoking is this true? I seen a few 7 series have that issue on the road, not sure if the 650 have similar problems or is it certain years that have it? Im open for any answers or suggestions. Thanks! |

I answered in the 6 series forum. I will add here that the 2012s were most noted for burning oil, but the later engine had so many changes that it is essentially a different engine. The issue is engine related, not model related. So any car that uses the N63 engine (550, 650, 750, etc) would have the same rate of cars that use some oil. "Using" oil is of two basic types. Burning it, usually because of bad valve seals, and leaking it, usually from valve cover and oil pan gaskets. My 650 has none of the above at 50k miles. The 6 cylinder in the 640 is more likely to have a leaky oil pan than the 650, and on an XDrive that is a very expensive repair ($2,000+) because of all the things that need to be removed.

Thanks for the response! Does the xDrive usually have issues before 80k miles? This 650 i was looking at have 46k miles on it and was planning on getting rid of it by 80k miles.

Not typically. Within the next couple weeks I am going to change all the fluids under there - tranny, transfer case and front and rear differentials, but I probably would not do even that if I had a plant to dump it at a set point.
