Tire lottery

The first delivered cars seem to be equipped in some cases with Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 and in other cases with Hankook Ventus S1 evo Z. I read in R&T that « a range of available tire models from Michelin, Pirelli, and Hankook will be available, depending on wheel package and buyer location ».Does anyone know more about this? I have to admit that I hope to get the new Michelins rather than the Hankooks.

I'm not totally sure about that. If I rely on the tire options that were offered on my M3 there was the possibility of receiving PS4S or Pirelli P0 as standard tires and the high performance option was instead Pilot sport Cup. The Michelin PSS5 replaces the PS5S more than the Cup series here I think.

I have the option to upgrade the tyres for €1000. I just don’t see the point. Take the stock rubber then use the €1000 to buy 4 new ones later, no?

Here in Canada both tire options (performance or high performance) are the same price. From my understanding (and previous experience with my M3 comp) the high performance option refers to track tires like the Michelin pilot sport cup (which wear out faster) while the base tires are performance but more versatile tires (PS4S/Pzero).

The Hankook is pretty good. Don't get all of the hate about it.

The Pirelli is worse, but still not bad.

I highly doubt anyone on here will be driving the car to its limits that a difference in these factory tires will matter.

Or maybe with the weight, everyday life driving will be test of the tires limits constantly. lol.

The M5 only weighs like 200lbs more than the Panamera Hybrid or Bently GT continental- do those cars have problems going through tires?

Nah I don’t think so, and I’m not a mathematician or engineer but something about the increased force on the tires and fancy changes in coefficient of friction I don’t think the increased weight will be entirely negligible. But no study will ever be able to tell us due to driving variability, conditions and surface. It will all be anecdotal from owners who probably don’t care about the cost of tires at the end of the day.

Performance comparisons aside, Michelins look better.

The round edges on the Hankook's makes you think with the weight, will roll over like our ankles!!!!!
