Myth about the first maintenance at 2000km after break in

Hi to all G90/99 owners past their break in period my dealer seems to state that at the first 2000km dealer maintenance they will do an oil change and « derestrict » the engine !!! Heard numbers around 20% of the engine potential power will be released after that ! Myth or reality ???

It's restricted before run-in, read this thread from this gentleman that obviously had no inttention following pre run-in recommendation : "https://g90.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2158481"

TLDR : it cuts power and sustained load / high rev is not possible before run in service making it poorly driftable before run in service is done, not like you'd be suppose to do that during that period either.

just took mine in. They throttle redline and 10% of the motors power - the software update is ECU. Its not as throttled as earlier M5's but it is a restricted.

Stupid question, but how do you ensure the tech does the ecu update? Is it a required step to check the car out, so to speak? Don’t know what to look for and want to ensure this step takes place in addition to oil change.

my guy mentioned unlocking full power, figured it was just car dealership bro science.

They did scope the engine though in addition to replacing fluids

This is so funny. Every M car forum has the same debate on every M model. I can tell you with 100% certainty, there is no magic unlocking of anything power related from any of the computers. They change the oil, filter and diff fluid and that is it. Computer service indicator is reset but absolutely ZERO is done to the computer to change anything or unlock anything. This is my 22nd BMW and my 11th M car. 4 eurodeliveries in Munich when it was a thing for the US customers and 5 Performance center deliveries in SC. I enjoy a wonderful relationship with my dealer and for this past break-in service, I was in the service bay hanging with the 2 techs working on the car and their manager who runs the service dept. You dont even have to believe a word I am saying. Just look at your service documents at the time of your break in service. It details everything that was done to your car. Unlocking a magical restriction from factory is a myth that every service manager laughs about. Its just not accurate. When I used to do the eurodeliveries, I would have in depth conversations with the awesome guys in Garching at the M studio. We've discussed break in everytime because I wanted to take the car onto the autobahn right away and blast down the road at 160mph and i did everytime with their blessing. You can still manage the RPM's while doing so and you can still care for the brakes as they did say to be cautious about creating uneven flat spots on the brake pads but other than that, they were all gung ho to enjoy the autobahn and we did everytime. None of those cars ever had oil issues and had their break in service upon arrival in the states. Long story short. Its all a myth. You do have to take care of the car and its components during the break in time frame but there is no magical power hiding in a computer waiting to be released.

Agree.
Rings and gears mating up.
Something a person should do with any new vehicle.
Engine oil and filter, transfer case, manual transmission, differential. Good for any.
Nice BMW stresses this.

That is not true. They do "unlock" the power. That is after your first 2000km service. I ask 2 dealer (Dutch and Hungery official M-dealers) and they have confirm that. So it is not a myth.
If you ask the dealer and they see on the screen a yellow sign then you can do that service even far before the 2000km. I have the yellow sign at 750km.
Next week the dealer wakeups my lion

Sounds good Mike. Good luck with your Lion. Dont get bit by all that new power... Please share the paperwork from your service so we can all learn what is actually done by the dealer at the break in service.

Do you have to pay extra for the break in service or is included in the car purchase? Naively I think I can answer it myself but checking if some of you are getting it for free 😅

BMW quote me around 600 euro.
So I bought the bmw service inclusive 3 years or 40.000 km for 1411 euro. I think that is a better deal

We get 5 year, 100,000km service included as standard on all BMW's here, so break in service is "free"

On my 25 G82 it didn’t unlock any more power. It was just engine and differential fluids. I personally don’t think G90 is any different. My 25 X6 M60i the Rpm was locked then slowly started letting me rev more until at 500 miles it was completely unlocked. But keep in mind on the X6 dash it clearly showed the Rpm’s were locked.

FWIW I drove demo car pre- first service and it didn't go beyond 250km/h. Was told it is unlocked at first service. Not sure if true, as I haven't had a chance to go that fast with my car yet.

Yes, it is true. I can confirm that the car won’t rev out during the breaking in period, but once the first service is done, it will.
