Maybe a dumb question…
What happens if you never charge the battery? Or, what happens if the battery gets depleted on a long trip? Is the car limited to just 585ish HP with no electric motor boost?
Also, this is a duplicate post as I posted this in another forum by mistake I think.. |

I think it will always keep itself charged to a certain point enough to always give you the power to make the most per the car can make. I believe you just won’t get the full ev only range unless you plug the junk in. This is my understanding.

Op- no harm in asking but I have to say it-
I hate that this is a question in an M5 forum.

I’m curious about this as well. I have no desire to install a home charger.

As it says in their website, should be:
"If you don't charge your plug-in hybrid, you can use the car as you would a traditional fuel-powered vehicle. The electric motor only acts as an additional power source when required and charged." Should be only combustion engine without electrical motor. https://www.bmw.co.uk/en/electric-ca...in-hybrid.html |

Thanks. I guess charging is compulsory and the car cannot maintain an internal state of charge on its own. If you don’t charge it, you’re essentially just lugging around 1,000+ lbs for nothing.

Someone else said it, this car is so heavy it needs the electric motors all the time to compensate. What happens after the battery is depleted will be my most common experience with this car. |

Same. My electrical panel is clear on the other side of the house from there the garage is. This means in order for me to install a home EV charger I’ll either have to run the line under ground across the property (not an inexpensive situation given the hard and rocky soil here in AZ) or tear up the inside of the house to run it up and over to the garage. When I was looking at getting an EV last year I stated to look into the costs of this and either solution was at least $5k and more likely looking to be closer to $10k. 🤦🏻‍♂️

The battery will require charging per BMW’s plug-in-hybrid Q&A.
While once charged, it can manage the charge level to help sustain the output, I’m pretty sure it’s not indefinite and will require periodic charging to maintain the car’s full power potential. Long road trips or extended spirited driving would probably deplete the battery. And not charging the battery at all, all but ensures you have a 585 HP combustion vehicle that is carrying around 1,000 lbs of just dead weight. |

All BMW PHEV cars can and will recharge on the combustion engine to keep a power reserve for the battery in case the battery is depleted.
I owned a 330e, it took a lot of very aggressive driving to end up "only" with the assistance of the ICE Engine. |
