2022 BMW X5 - no touchscreen!

Anyone order a new BMW X5 (I opted for the PHEV) mid October '21 or later and learned your car will not have touchscreen or the back up assistant? I just confirmed the unfortunate news.

What are folks doing? Keeping or canceling?

How useful are both features and can you do without them?

No touch screen? Yikes.

I can’t imagine how well that would work out. The iDrive Controller is pretty solid, but some map functions require touching the map for the full features.

There is a entire topic of G20 owners receiving the same notices, unfortunately.

This is happening across a majority of models. The backup assistant is alright but the touchscreen appears to be a non starter for most.

Lol they'll cut features to save themselves money but still charge you the same for the car.

Oh wow thats pretty unexpected

Touchscreen helps when you are seeking through a song or something, its handy, especially on a X5, this should be mandatory

I think even Corsas etc have touchscreen these days, should be a basic thing in a BMW!

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I use the idrive controller 95% of the time. Whenever I use the touchscreen I'll inevitably hit some pump in the road and then tap the wrong item. Plus the fingerprints drive me nuts...

I left the original screen film on, no fingerpritnts no scratches

Oh and bonus tip, dont press the middle of the controller to confirm too much, or else it will get pushed in and worn down

It's related to the chip shortage, they are rationing what's available. Here's an article: https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/b...chip-shortage/

My main problem is that only a few thousand of these cars will have no touchscreen, but these cars will require a special software update which will make them a minority.

In the future, this will 1) potentially cause issues with updates and other functionality breaking - not sure how much BMW will care as they are making us sign a form and 2) resale or trade-in value will suffer as this is a Covid car.

On top of this, if you are paying $75K+ for a car, I would expect every feature I paid towards.

The one thing that would make all of this understandable and acceptable is if BMW offered a future retrofit, not $500 which is a slap in the face.

Ah, good call. Mine had the film removed when I took delivery.

Nice to know about the center controller, though I'm on a lease so should probably be ok

I will say, I do like that BMW still has the buttons for the climate controls. I had an Audi previously, and I hated that all that stuff was going to a touchscreen where everything is buried in a bunch of submenus.

Without getting into technicalities... how in the world does anyone plan to use Carplay with apps like Waze or Spotify w no touchscreen? You better like Siri... cuz scrolling around in Spotify would be a disaster.

It does seem however, consumer aren't particularly concerned which as someone mentioned this just means BMW is laughing all the way to the bank by offering credits worth a few lattes...

Yeah, I went to my dealer yesterday to play around only using voice and iDrive controller. Actually works fine for everything other than CarPlay. But CarPlay is when it gets frustrating. Manageable but it's like having 90% of the functionality you paid for and expected.

I totally understand the chip shortage is out of BMW's hands but what is totally within their hands is to offer a free future retrofit when the shortage stabilizes instead of 5 tanks of gas to make up for a loss of a significant feature in the car. They are choosing not to do this to prevent any impact to profit at the cost of customer satisfaction knowing that they have the upper hand.

One can use a scroll-wheel for UP-DOWN and capacitive turn signal buttons for LEFT-RIGHT on that yoke.
That would do it.
