Frozen Deep Grey vs Dark Graphite with Matte PPF

I have my M5 Touring on order. Right now I have Dark Graphite over Silverstone, but was also thinking about Frozen Deep Grey.

I have never had a matte car, but have always been intrigued by them. One concern that I have is the maintenance/repairability of a matte paint job. I know that are not as bad as they used to be, but more issues than a gloss paint.

I have also never had a car with full PPF, so that sounds kind of nice.

Does anyone have any experience with matte PPF? Looking at the cost, it is not a meaningful difference for full wrap vs factory frozen paint. Frozen is $3,600 and a full matte PPF would be about $5k-$6k.

I have never leased a car before for myself, but am considering leasing this car because who knows what the values will look like on these in the future. I may do a 1-pay lease on this car. Would the matte matte PPf need to be removed before returning the car (assuming I don’t buy it out at the end)? I know going with factory frozen would be “cheaper” since it would be included in the cap cost of the lease versus I will eat the full cost of the wrap if I turn it in at the end, but on a $140k car it doesn’t seem like a big enough difference to be a driver.

Thanks!

First of all, I am a huge proponent of PPF on my cars. I get front end PPF on all my daily drivers and I did a full PPF wrap on my Audi R8 (which I am keeping forever).

That said, I am not in favor of matte PPF wraps. I have seen lots of matte wraps and they never look as good as the real matte paint. You make a good point about turning in a lease with matte PPF, I don't know the answer to that. I have turned in leases with gloss PPF and there is no issue. But matte PPF does make a substantive change to the car so I could see a dealer wanting it taken off. Of course, the paint underneath should be in pristine condition but you would have the expense and headache of removal and cleanup, assuming they make you do that. From that perspective, it makes little sense to pay to put the PPF on and then pay again to remove it, just for a 3 year lease term. Save the money, get the matte paint and just drive it.

Another concern is when matte PPF gets damaged by rock chips or door dings, it looks worse than gloss PPF. I have a guy at my golf club with matte PPF on a Mercedes C63, and it looks like garbage because it has some tears in spots where he got door dings.

Full PPF on my Taycan CT 4S was $7000. This was at an XPel company store in ATX. The Taycan is a similar size to the M5 Touring, so should be close to the same cost. I have gloss PPF and full ceramic, car always looks good. Not sure how a matte PPF would stand up, there is an XM in Austin with a full matte job, not sure if they are forum members, but if they are they could give a better idea on how it is holding up.

I like the look of the matte paints but never pulled the trigger.

I do my own ceramic coatings (CQuartzUK) and top coats (Gliss) and from what I understand the matt paints (or PPF) do not work well with ANY coatings. Yes, I know they sell "special" Quartz coatings for Matte PPF (and paint) but the whole nature of the matte finish is a non-smooth/non-glossy finish which any good coating (Quartz or Wax) will start to fill in. Its my understanding that the "special" quartz coatings for matte finishes are merely thinned out versions of the normal ones (and will start to fill in the matte surface anyway - just more slowly).

If all you want to do is wash/clean your car I expect the matte finishes will look great. ...but if you are someone who applies and maintains their own coatings, then I expect they would actually diminish the look of the car. IOW: once you have the matte paint/PPF, there is not much else you can do with the surface (other than try and keep it clean).

in my opinion the matte PPF aren't as good as frozen paint, they end up pretty one dimensional looking vs frozen that throws all sorts of different colors and brightness levels off it. I've been running no PPF at all for 4k miles on my frozen portimao and there's no obvious rock chips or damage, it's a pretty tough paint. Dr. Beasely's ceramic coat is a must though.

I did not know you could PPF over a frozen paint. Does it not damage the original paint if it must be removed later?

No issues , I have an f90 w/Frozen Dark Grey with Xpel Stealth and have had the hood ppf replaced with no issues. In my opinion for the peace of mind I would ppf frozen paint.
