Do You Lease or Own Your Current Car?

Thinking about you primary driver, do you lease or own your current vehicle?

What kind of car is it?

Leasing the 235i.

I leased to own the previous 335i and got tired of the maintenance so I sold it. I will only lease cars from now on. If I want to own it, I will buy a Lexus. Depending on how reliable the 235i is though, I might end up buying it out.

Own my current 2009 328i xDrive - bought new.
Will lease next one. Dealing with maintenance sucks.

I do my own maintenance, only own vehicles. Two Zs and doesn't look like it'll be stopping anytime soon.

I keep my cars six plus years. It is cheaper to own for me.

Good point about the length of time in which a person typically owns a vehicle. These lease/buy topics generally turn into self righteous discussions replete with "If you're leasing, you can't afford [insert car here]" type comments. The reality is that it makes more sense to lease if you change cars every few years; buy if you tend to keep cars until loan maturation.

Own with titles from day one, but would probably never buy another BMW. I would lease.

BMW seems to have embraced a nearly all lease mentality. The lease residuals seem well above the real world residual value of their vehicles.

I've always owned my vehicles since I tend to own them for quite some time. But for everyone who leases here, why did you lease?

Sure is.....

Sometimes you hear, "If you own a business, leasing makes total sense."

Well, if you own a successful business, owning makes total sense, you still depreciate the expense. It comes down to cash flow. You need a truck to make deliveries, but your business is in the red. So you lease a truck. But when your personal finances are in the red, you could buy a less expensive car....

My answer is easy: 12 vehicles - including the car purchased for a gf - since 2002 (...an '02 330ci, an '03 M3, an '04 G35, an '05 M3, an '06 330i, an '08 M3, an '09 M3, a '11.5 M3, an '11 128i for the GF, a '13 X5, '14 335i, '14 X5)...the M4 will make 13. I've never kept a car long enough to even get out of the warranty period.

So do you just get a 12 month lease every time you get a new car?

I always lease with the intent on keeping them through the entire lease period, but I always end up selling or trading. I have dealer connects. Some cars were only kept a short time. The '13 X5 I sold after 5 months and the '14 X5 I just sold yesterday (..it was a month old). The '09 M3 I sold after about 5 months and the '04 G35 was stolen. The '14 335i is for sale now. Hopefully it'll sell within the next week or two.
