Guy's I'm very close in getting a new bike and started to eyeball with an Ducati.
What do you think about that bike, is it overrated and I should better stick with the common imports like Kawasaki, Yamaha, Honda?

I had a 99' Ducati 748 to be exact. Def not overrated. Outstanding bike and for the year it still stands out among all the new stuff. V-Twin has great power delivery and the un-mistakeable sound of a Ducati is awesome.

I had the kawasaki zx6r and had the 2008 ducati 1098. The Ducati is a beast! Sound was amazing with Ackrapovic full exhaust. I sold the 1098 as it was just too much power for me. How long have you been riding ?

My wife has a Ducati Monster, beautiful bike. My two cents is don't get something ordinary like a Kawi or Yamaha go for the more exotic. Life is too short. I bought my Z4MC because they are unique.....but again, just my two cents.

I love bikes but I am not sure I would buy a older 748. Just my pref. I can get a lot of other bikes for similar money that would be a better buy. (assuming he is asking book value).

I have a 1999 Ducati 748S and I LOVE it. I bought it new in 1999 and will never sell it. The handling is telepathic and it's still looks like art. It's been reliable but these bikes has their quirks, they run hot in traffic and the riding position is fairly extreme. I have a light tune and it the fuel mix make it cough now and then when driven slow, it likes to go fast. They aren't for everyone, feel a bit fragile ( reliability wise but aren't ), spares and repair work are relatively pricey and can take a long time ( months to receive from Bologna ). At this age, maybe not the best for a daily ride. But if anything man made can be called special, these are in the top list. The way design and performance come together is perfection.

I am going to be unpopular opinion bear as always but... please do yourself a favor and stay away from bikes... I simply know, know of and have seen too many people lose their lives on one.

I had a 2001 748S back in 2000/2001 bought brand new. I loved that machine. They are underpowered by today's standards, but they handle like nothing else. Goes without saying, but they are beautiful and timeless.

Things to watch out for are flaking rockers which require significant service (this was an issue with these engines), and knowledge that every 6k miles you get to do a valve service that can run $600-$900 at a reputable shop.

I've ridden sportbikes for the better part of two decades, and think you bring up a valid point for anyone considering a purchase. Motorcycles are inherently dangerous. Conditions/actions that in a car would result in a minor fender bender or slide can have fatal results on a bike. Just know that if you ride, you will crash. This is not ment to discourage riding, but is intended to courage safe(r) riding. My advice to anyone considering a bike... Wear your gear, respect the bike, know your limits, anticipate other drivers' stupidity (good luck with this one), and heal fast.

I cant help specifically with the 748 mate but I have ridden bikes since I was about 8 and have ridden big sports bikes since I was 18 (now 50 ). Yes there are many peanuts on the road who are trying to kill you but you certainly remember that when you ride. Touch wood, I have never had a major incident on the road, just the race track, so don't listen the Mum's above.

My current bike is a 2014 1199 Panigale S, pic in my avatar.

Just make sure the bike rides well, has been serviced and maintained properly and most importantly make sure you don't pay too much for it.

No matter how sensible you are about it, unless you truly live in the middle of nowhere where you can go 5 or 10 minutes without seeing a car, it doesn't matter how sensible you are because there are variables out of your control. I LOVE motorcycles, particularly Italian motorcycles, and I'm sure I would become hooked if I bought one, but I realistically realized that it just is a matter of of time before I crashed and in suburban traffic a low speed mishap could quickly turn quite serious. It's just not worth the risk IMHO

Basically riding since the age of 16 but to be honest it's more of an on & off relationship not comparable with the love and passion I share with my car's lol

The thought I have is even if I won't be interested to ride it anymore, I could easely put it into hibernation and ad it to my keeper-collection.
Probably planning to ( seriously ) to keep the Duc in my living room ( no big deal to push the bike over the lawn into the house
Think it would be anyhow an eyecatcher inside as same as from the outside.

As an occasionally ridden bike that will spend more time getting stared at than ridden... sure, a 748 would be an amazing bike to own. It's supposed to be a torture rack but bike comfort is different for everyone. I've owned my share of Ducati's and currently own a Streetfighter S that I'm in love with. It's got the 1098 power plant and I honestly think it was too much power lol. But power with bikes are very relative. I can have just as much fun on a slow bike as long as it is a V Twin. I find inline 4's boring on the street.

Stepped back from owning an Duc 748 just because of what you mentioned...the torture rack, this was so true.
I sat on the Duc and everything felt uncomfortable. From the position of the handlebars up to the the location of the fuel- tank, in my oppinion to far stretched wich tuck's your jewel's pretty bad lol
Cool bike to look at but for my height, asolutely a no-go.
Anyhow be prepared for the crappiest picture- presentation in man kind, you've ever seen, called my day at the bike store lol
Mr. Brainwash( banksie's former Buddy ) could learn from me!
