Any knockoff suction mounts that work as well as the $40 GoPro branded one for outside the car?

Don't know because I have the gopro brand but whatever you do, make sure you make a tether as a back up and attach it to something on your car. I made one and it costs just a couple bucks. I know someone who lost his while driving so I always tether it.

Honestly please pay the extra cost. It will also give you peace of mind. You do not want to drive and all of a sudden it comes off.

They just work. I have used my suction mount(s) at speeds of 145MPH and not one issue.

One question on using a tether, what to do tether it TOO???

In the eight years of using GoPros on the track, I have never seen one fall off if it was set up properly. My fear would be that tethering to most places on the car would have it bouncing around (if it fell off) and doing damage to your car and doing more damage to the car than the cost of the camera. Its not like you can stop on the track to fix things...

Yeah I've used mine on some pretty rough Auto-X courses and that thing is rock solid.

Go with one that has a dual suction mount, it will enable you to reach SO many more angles. My friend has the single suction gopro one and the dual suction one allows you to get a little bit more creative with angles. I'm pretty sure I would rip my bumper or paint off before the suction gave out, this thing is SOLID! Spend $500+ on a camera, don't skimp the extra $10 bucks to get a nice mount

I would not cheap out on a non GoPro suction cup. Also just ordered the tow hook mount from Burger Motorsports. Haven't tried it yet but looks very well constructed.

Agreed.

I've hit speeds around 160 mph and the go pro suction cup car mount held up great. No problems.

If it fell off and was attached to the roll cage, chances are I would either get hit in the helmet and scare the shit out of me or there would be more damage to the side of the car than cost of a new go pro.

+1. Watch your door or panel get all dinged up while it dangles there. I'd say it's a 50/50 shot. But hey, a gopro falling off would potentially be some pretty cool footage if you're filming in 4k (slowmotion)

I used to tether mine just to the side mirror and left the tether long enough to clear the door, but short enough to where it wasnt dragging on the ground. Never fell off, but I had buddies that fell off sometime during the runs and didnt realize it, and I had some guys fall off and ding up the door like was mentioned.

I would only use a GoPro branded suction cup mount. ALSO... I always carry some glass cleaner and a micro fiber towel. I make sure to clean off the car AND the suction cup before mounting it on the car. I've never had an issue with the mount coming off the car.

In all honesty... WHY spend $400 plus on your GoPro and not afford to spend $40 on your mount?

Btw... over here the GoPro mounts sell for 60 euros. Everything costs more over here!

They really should be teathered so they don't smack the poor schmuck behind you - better to scratch your own ride then even chance the remote event an ejected camera contacts anything aft of you.

yup, I wouldn't trust the aftermarket ones. I have seem a few times them coming off cars and almost getting hit by one. Just suck it up and pay the extra money for one that will not fail. Have had the same suction mount since my first go pro over 5-6 years ago and no issues.

Should be pretty clear at this point but go with GoPro brand sucker.

I've been using one for couple years now and it is solid. No chance it falls off unless you don't suck it on right. I've placed mine all over various spots on cars and never once had an issue.

I mount the go pro to the front of the car to get a 1st person POV and then wire a microphone to the exhaust. Works extremely well. I don't think a go pro at the rear will be able to record an exhaust well without extra wind noise. Even if it does, it won't pick up the low frequencies of the exhaust.

I have the RAM mounts, along with the GoPro suction cup mount. RAM is the only aftermarket one I would trust...
