Project: S55 in a 240/260/280Z...Feasible?
So, I'm looking for a car project to start in the next year or so, somewhat of a long term project. I've always been a big fan of the early Datsun Z cars, and plenty of them have had various engine swaps, including small block V8s and such.
So, given that the old Z's have straight 6's for their original engine, and long noses, I'm guessing that they would have enough room to fit an S55 in their; obviously custom engine mounts, radiator, intercooler, pretty much everything. I'm thinking the long pole in the tent would be the electronics; in other words, what is going to control the S55? The ECU from a stock F8x? But they are so intertwined, and you don't have many of the other components, the ECU will probably be freaking out. Aftermarket (there are a couple open source ECU's out there)? Other options? Anyways, only an interesting thought project at this point. Also, not exactly sure which part of the forum to throw this in, feel free to move it wherever.

I think it will end up more than buying another M3/M4 for tearing around in. The complexity of the ECU and Canbus is just too much for a limited fund project. Unless you have allot of money to throw at it.

I'd think the electronics on the F8X would be a nightmare even if cost is no object. Why not do an S52 or S54, even add a turbo if you like. Those swaps have been done a lot (especially S52) and parts would be plentiful and relatively cheap.

I have a 240 with an SR in it. Don't waste your money trying to reinvent the wheel. Those platforms have multiple options that have been modified 1,000 different ways. Pick one and use the existing blueprints.

Some info
1) there's no aftermarket ECU that will run the S55 yet. 2) the boost control system is extremely unusual (no diverter valve just wastegates) you'll NEVER get it running on anything other then the stock ECU. (Mapping, and also good luck with the Direct injection.. It's stock ECU or bust) 3) stock ECU is going to need a canbus to the transmission minimum and the gateway is in neither. The gateway is the the gauge cluster. So you would HAVE to use the gauge cluster as well. (Even if its manual the manual gerbox has gear sensors now that the ECU will need to see) 4) you'll need to run the EKP module as well. (The low pressure fuel pump controller) the car will limp mode without it. Communication protocol unknown, maybe direct wire, maybe can. (You figure it out with ISTA or WDS) Good luck |

Bah. You guys are ruining all my fun!
You all are right, of course, many other swaps will be much easier. Still have to think about this one.

Can't go wrong with rb20/25/26 sr20/ 2jz or lsx since it's been done for years. Iv'e even seen a 4g63 in a 280. keep it simple.

If the S55 uses the same style as N55 then you could possibly get it running using a Motec. eg http://www.motec.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=2157 |

Is S55 a must?
S54 can be had for much less and still make tons of HP, compatible with standalones (Pectel, Motec, AEM, etc). Awron also offer engine swap kits also for S65/S85 if looking to go that route.
