M6 track car???
I've see so many builds with an e90/e92 being turned into track cars but how come no e63 M6 track car builds.
I know they are heavy and unreliable but i'm sure a lot of that weight is from the interior and unsprung weight and much of the reliability issues are from the SMG and bullshit parts that will be taken out with a track build. With prices dropping, how come we aren't seeing anyone turn one into a stripped out track car. Manual + V10 + coupe = Win (or you would think)... what else could you ask for! The only thing I have found is this but I have no idea what any of it means. http://minkara.carview.co.jp/en/userid/529628/profile/ |

-Heavy. -unreliable. -Alot of weight from the interior. -SMG Gear box are very poor. Just cause a car depreciates over time doesn't necessarily mean replacement parts depreciate too. Plus would you want a track car that you know your self is gonna brake down every session. Even if it's affordable it doesn't make sense. Hope this finds light to your question |

The only reason anyone buys an M6 ( at least of that gen) is to brag to M3 owners or have no taste.
With the current gen and the debut of the gran coupe its more of a want a bigger car with reasonable back seats but don't want it to look like a sedan. With an SMG i would stay far away from tracking as that stupid transmission costs more than the current value of the cars. And you will blow one eventually. The fact of the mater is the M6 is on a much bigger frame and the engine weighs alot more than the one on an M3. All for basically no more usable room or speed. You could rip apart the interior of an M6 and probably not shave any more weight than ripping out the interior of an M3. So the M3 would still be the faster better handling car for it. M6 =/= RaceCar |

So the weight of the engine as compared to the S65 (indirect source) is 529 lb vs 445 lb which results in an approximate 2% increase of weight on a projected stripped vehicle weight of 3500 pounds. http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=233682 As mentioned before, I am referring to the manual 6 speed models... we all know what problems the smg had. Also, much of the weight comes from the interior, sound deadening material and unsprung weight. Figure if you completely strip the interior and replace the following items for lighter components: - lightweight seats - carbon hood - aluminum drive shaft - carbon hood / trunk - lightweight battery - remove useless plastic from underneath hood - wheels - AP BBK (sheds weight, adds performance - Suspension components (also usually sheds weight) - Ti exhaust - random weight loss such as AC etc... I figure you can get that car down to about 3500 pounds. Package that with a bolt on S85 V10 and you have yourself an awesome weekend track toy. |

As long as you avoid the SMG tranny, I don't see why it wouldn't be a viable option.

e9x (6mt) curb weight = 3700 lb approx stripped weight = 3200 lb Stock crank hp = 414 hp e63 (6mt) curb weight = 3800 approx stripped weight = 3300 lb Stock crank hp = 500 hp The e63 isn't as much of a pig as you may think! To be honest, it looks to be a better track option than the e9x platform. |

2) What is unreliable about the drivetrain? 3) Weight addressed in point 1 4) I mentioned manual 6 speed. What is unreliable about the manual transmission in these cars. I really trying to pul up some information because I don't see how this 500 hp 8250 rpm redline V10 coupe doesn't have ONE build thread on any of the forums that I can find. Think about it... - strip interior for weight loss - kw cs + camber plates - lightweight wheels and R compounds - AP racing BBK - Full intake, exhaust, headers and tune - Upgraded clutch and flywheel for reliability and durability - Race seats, harness bar and a harness That would be a sick HPDE/weekend toy. |

It's simply too big in terms of weight and footprint. Can you do it? Sure, I know a guy who turned a Chrysler 300 into a track car. Should you?
- Heavier cars are harder to drive - Large size makes it less nimble, regardless of weight, it will suffer in low speed corners - V10 parts expensive - It WILL break - Bigger car = bigger brakes and tires = $$$$ - Limited aftermarket support

Well then you should call BMW and tell them they shelve the M6 GT3 that they're going to start racing next year.

The OEMs presumably have a bigger budget than your average track day bro. Also, do you really think the car they're campaigning in any way resembles the street car they sell on the showroom floor?
