Bring the i8 drivetrain down to regular cars

Given the advantage of the electric/hybrid drivetrain, this looks to be the future of the automobile. I really wish BMW can bring this drivetrain down to regular cars, like say combining the turbo 4 or 6 with a battery and electric motor to achieve greater fuel efficiency and superior performance.

When do you think this will happen? I wonder why it hasn't happened yet... are they still testing reliability? Is cost the primary issue? I would think many would gladly pay a reasonable premium for greater efficiency and superior performance like we see in the i8. Of course if it costs a whole lot more, that wouldn't work... but I wonder how much of the i8's cost is in the drive train vs the car's body/design and materials.

Not a BMW insider, but from a lay perspective...if it can be done and it makes good business sense and they have the resources, then it will be done.

Many upcoming BMWs are going to offer plug-in hybrid versions. This was announced a while ago. I believe the X5 will be the first one available with a plug-in hybrid version.

It's called the Chevrolet Volt...

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

The all new volt looks (can't believe I'm saying this) pretty reasonably decent.

Yes the new 7er receives the 740eDrive version next year, as does the BMW X1 25eDrive.
The next generation 5er receives 3 eDrive models in entry, middle and high performance. By 2020 every BMW model will be offered in eDrive.

It is exciting from a performance aspect as you can get over 500PS from a four cylinder and over 600PS from a six cylinder.

With the added benefits of the Carbon Core being implemented in core BMW models it provides a lightweight starting point.

I kinda like the original better, but I've yet to see the Gen II in 3D . The Prius is still butt ugly as is the i3 IMO.
