open yourself an online bank account w/ like emigrantdirect or hsbc or ingdirect instead of putting money in a CD. returns are similar and money's fully liquid. the beauty of it is you can add it to it any time and it's not easily accessible like your atm is

good luck

By food, do you mean eating out?

Go to the grocery store then. Sam's or Costco. Buy in bulk.

And quit driving so much, lol.

Really though, we need more detail to try and help you out.

Actually if he puts $1K in a cd, for say a year at a rate of 5%, that's more than his interest will be in a standard savings account.

If he then takes the amount of money the cd gave him in interest and adds it to the next thousand, his money will continue to grow. And then when he gets to a point he feels safe and able to take more risk, he can move to stocks and bonds.

I cut my own hair. Figured over 10 years, 17 haircuts a year or so (~every 3 weeks), average price will be $15-$20 (let's say $20), that's at least $3000. That's a nice set of BBS wheels and rubber..

I did get a real haircut for my brother's wedding though..

Then just use a standard savings account. But why not talk to bank and find a high yield cd? That way you're saving and gaining interest.

And seriously, cook your own lunch and take it with you during the day, and don't eat every night. And tell your gf to pick you up sometimes. Drive your house. I never understood my friends who felt it was their prerogative to drive their gf's around all the time.

Is there really a CD that gives you 5% on $1k? I doubt.
My bank gives 4.5% on Savings ($15k min), and the highest CD I have seen was 4.74% a month ago, but I don't see them any more...

Over the next 50 years, assuming no inflation, that's $15K of haircuts.. With inflation.. $20K, $25K.. That's a ton of money..*

*Assuming I have hair for 50 more years..

more things I do to save:

live frugally (is that a word), try not to buy things you don't need just because it is on sale or tempting. Best way is to stay away from mall.

Find one credit card that gives you cash back and use it whenever you buy anything.

Try to stay away from financing on big purchases.

Don't buy brand name anything at the supermarket.

If you own a house, invest in a programable thermostat, check and beef up insulation around doors and windows, turn off the lights in room you don't use, begins using florescent light bulb.

Don't eat out too much

If you have a cell phone, think about getting rid of the land line phone.

anyone else wanna contribute?

dont forget always try Credit union first.

Also, for those who are home owners and car owner, try DIY vs hiring a professional when ever possible.

Yep, I agree with you..

Shut off lights whenever you go from room to room.

Programmable thermostat FTW.. As low as you can go when you're not home.. The more zones the better too, at night you only need to heat bedrooms, not the whole house, for instance..

Close blinds, etc during the day during the summer to keep heat out.. During the winter if it is very sunny, open the blinds, to get heat in..

You only need a cell phone, no need for a land line really. If you do need a land line, bundle it with your cable or internet to save money..

Exactly. A buzz cut is a buzz cut.. The only difference is a barber puts the powder on the back of your neck to smell nice..

please tell me where you can get a 5% return on a 1 year CD with out a minimum deposit of like $100,000?

Wells Fargo offers 2.15% on a 1 year w/ a $10,000 minimum deposit.
My credit union offers 3.35% on a 1 year w/ a $1,000 minum deposit, bumps up to 3.65% if you're > $90,000

if you go to emigrantdirect you get 3.60% return on a liquidable account no strings, no bs...wouldn't you rather get the same or better returns w/ the liquidability option?

HSBC internet banking for the longest time was 5.25% without any minimum. And it was liquid (well, it takes 3 days to transfer somewhere, but I still consider it fully liquid). Now with the way everything is it's down to 3% or so..

i bet your savings rate isn't at 4.5% any more and the CD rate's lower too...
remember, fed cutting rates affects savings rates. if the banks can't charge more to lend they money, they're not going to give you more to park your money so they can lend it... did that make sense?

dont forget if your electric bill is very high, there is the solar screen. I have them on the summer and take them down in the winter (I need the sunlight in the winter). I make my own solar screen (it is a piece of cake to do).
