Study: 1 in 4 teen girls has an STD

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- At least one in four teenage girls nationwide has a sexually transmitted disease, or more than 3 million teens, according to the first study of its kind in this age group.

A virus that causes cervical cancer is by far the most common sexually transmitted infection in teen girls aged 14 to 19, while the highest overall prevalence is among black girls -- nearly half the blacks studied had at least one STD. That rate compared with 20 percent among both whites and Mexican-American teens, the study from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found.

About half of the girls acknowledged having sex; among them, the rate was 40 percent. While some teens define sex as only intercourse, other types of intimate behavior including oral sex can spread some infections.

For many, the numbers most likely seem "overwhelming because you're talking about nearly half of the sexually experienced teens at any one time having evidence of an STD," said Dr. Margaret Blythe, an adolescent medicine specialist at Indiana University School of Medicine and head of the American Academy of Pediatrics' committee on adolescence.

i think it has more to do with the people polled than anything. they probably did this study right outside a frat party or something.

I'd like to see the statistics on what kind of teens they interviewed; where they lived, what environment, public/private schooled, etc.

This definitely doesn't apply to my HS. No way in hell...

I've used a condom on all girls I didnt know too well, had histories, or hadn't been tested. There have only been two girls in my life that deserved the respect (and pleasure) of not having a condom used on them. One of which was a virgin to almost all sexual activities (back in high school of course), and the other (and current mate) who has only had a few partners in her life and must be tested for her birth control anyway. I myself get tested every so often and have stayed relatively responsible in this sense.

My point? That if people stay responsible and sensible about their sex lives and their partners, as well as maintain great personal hygiene, the likely hood of STD's being caught or spread should greatly be reduced. I've been sexually active since the age of 16 (now 20) and have yet to have a problem with STD's. The task at hand was simple, all I've done is make sure I know who I'm sleeping with, take proper precautions (condoms, etc.), and get tested. My biosphere or "habitat"

......is orange county. So I speak for this corner of the US.
