Website down rant.

So I would like to check out some stain color choices before heading to the hardware store. I figure I would jump on Minwax's website to see what choices are available. Nope. The website has been down since early this morning. In this day in age where your online presence is critical to your bottom line, I'm surprised a company the size of Minwax has such a terrible IT staff. I know if I were one of the people responsible for maintaining their website, I would be fired over this.

Ok rant over.

Maybe they're still recovering from the ddos attack.

Nope. The error message on their website says a backend server is down. The DDOS issue was due to a DNS problem. Not related to this issue. Here's the error message that pops up.

Message from the NSAPI plugin:

No backend server available for connection: timed out after 10 seconds or idempotent set to OFF.

On my first attempt to post a reply here I got a database error page. Shit happens.

Minwax no doubt outsources their web hosting. They probably have a Service Level Agreement (SLA) stating expected uptime (99.99% or whatever) and recovery time from problems. If they figure they're losing business over an outage (or repeated outages), they'll be shopping around for another host. But I'm guessing if it's only been a few hours, they're not too worried about it.

It's going on about 7 hours with their website being down. Really unacceptable. I wonder if anyone has gotten any alerts about the site being down or if they're asleep at the wheel.

And I'm also the IT folk I talked about. Been doing things from tier 1 support all the way up to being an architect of large scale enterprise solutions. I know about limitations of systems and I know what's possible. To have a public website down for as long as Minwax's has due to some obvious internal issue is unacceptable. To me someone was asleep at the wheel plain and simple. A user/customer shouldn't be staring at an error message for hours. If the IT team was on top of this, they would have at least placed a message up saying the site is down for maintenance and to come back later.

$10 says their "internal" database was still referenced using DNS entry and that is why it was out the same amount as most DYN errors.

I find that hard to believe. If they really set up their website to have their web server depend on an external DNS server for a back end database server, then the people who architected that mess really need to be fired.

The site was back up late afternoon/early evening yesterday. I had already headed over to Lowes by that point.

Uhmm, (almost) all systems rely on "an external DNS server".

Eh. Never mind. Pay no attention to that geek behind the curtain.
