I don't know if you guys have the new Subaru Forester in the States but they are semi SUV's that are reliable and are great to drive as well.

Cherokees are good, but they need to go back in the shop every once a while for fixing.
May I ask why you need a Suv? Might want to think about trucks instead if you need the luggage space. |

Jeep Grand Cherokee - I used to have a '97 and it was an awesome beater. It ran up to about 160k and then started to shit out.

Ford Exploders are shitty and older Chevy Blazers are small as hell.
I'd go for the Jeep. I always liked the 99-04 Grand Cherokees but be careful, if it were used to off-road it could have some major hidden issues.

I would get on auto tader.com and look these up.
About.com rates these as best used suv's. Sub Forester. Toy 4-Runner. Niss Pathfinder. Ford Explorer. Honda CR-V. Best may not mean best $. I bought an old girlfriend a Ford Explorer for cheap about 3 years ago. It was clean and she still has it. It has munched 2 driver window motors....I paid for one of them.

Find an older Tahoe. Not sure how much you can get one for, but they last forever. My mom's currently has ~190K miles on the original tranny. And anytime I drove/drive it, I beat the shit out of it.
My dad use to have a Chevy Blazer. It had ~155K miles on it when they sold it. I trust only Chevy's for long time reliability. I know no one who has had a Ford of Chrysler that has lasted worth a shit. |

98 w/ 190K $13,000.... I like the Pathfinder as a beater for the lack of a timing belt. Chain for me. Don't know about the 4 Runner. Both are probably out of his price range.

Cherokee
I had one and it was great, fixes were dirt cheap when things did break. Mine had the straight six with a 5-speed manual box. It was quite quick but it was quite a gas guzzler too.

Grand cherokee is a hell of a beater. I had a 94 grand cherokee with the 5.2 v8. that thing had 212k miles, i used it to transport my go-karts and my quads.

two choices i would pick based.
subaru forrester very mod friendly if you choose to but more importantly really reliable. all weather. honda CRV picked up it for 9g. clocked over thousands of miles over 1 years. got into an accident and totaled. got a cheque back for 11g based on market value. excellent gas mileage for small SUV as well. as reliable as a honda can get. |
