Anyone sold their car to Carmax?

Are they pretty straightforward? Do they basically offer BB?

Already sold two cars with Carmax. The amount I received for each car is somewhere in between the low and high kbb values. Higher than the trade in value I would have received from a dealership and still more than the highest offer I received from a private party.

To answer your other question yes it is very straight forward. You just bring your car and they will appraise it. After appraisal they will give you the offer. First car I sold to Carmax took about 4 hours to complete appraisal, finalize paperwork, and cut the check. The second car took around 1.5 hours. Just depends how busy they are when you bring your car. I believe the offer is good for two weeks, so you have time to decide or look for other buyers. The good thing about this is you can use their offer as your floor price should you decide to look for other buyers.

From my personal one time experience their offer is pretty poor, lower than the trade in offer i received from a dealer.

Maybe it depends on the CarMax location and market.

There's already a thread on this, but yes, I've used Carmax and I was very satisfied.

It almost certainly will matter since they usually offer wholesale / auction value and likely try to buy cars locally they can sell locally vs. shipping all over the country.

Their appraisals are free of charge so you should def. see what their offer for your car is.

I have sold a car to Carmax and have gotten better values than most dealerships.
I also use carmax value and take them to dealers and tell them to match them.

I took 2 cars to CarMax. Both had very different outcomes.

The first was my M5, and they offered me substantially more than my local dealer. I owned the car outright, so it was a simple transaction.

The second was my wife's Mercedes SUV. They offered the exact same as my local dealer (owned by the same company as the BMW dealer mentioned above...shares the same building and finance manager). I purchased that car from Mercedes after a lease, so the original title had the lessor's name (Mercedes) with a letter from Mercedes that stated the car was now mine, and Mercedes had no financial interest in it. But, the title had yet to be transferred completely. CarMax wouldn't accept this, and refused to purchase the vehicle. So I sold it to the local dealer who had absolutely no issue purchasing the vehicle without my name on the title - the letter from Mercedes was enough.

Long story short: some offers they make are better than what you might find at a dealer, some not. But I'd suggest having all of your paperwork be as simple as possible. Still not sure why they wouldn't buy the Mercedes; my guess is they don't want to deal with too much paperwork.

Always recommend taking your car to Carmax before posting it online for sale.
They will not offer you the best deal but it will give you an idea on how much you can get for your car.

Thanks for the advice Mike. I was trying to find someone for a lease transfer but this may be the quicker option.

Good luck

They offered me a fair price for my F30. I later tried to sell them my E92 335 and they offered 2k for it
Ended up selling it for $7400

While there is good advice here, it wouldn't hurt to go and get a quote from them. Sold two cars to them and it went really well. Got more than expected. They were not BMW's. Good luck!

They offered 23k for my F150 the other week. Traded it in for 26K (no haggling) at a Jeep dealership.

Do get it a quote from them and just use it as a baseline.

Sold my old VW to them for what I thought was a damn good price. Actually got more than was I was looking for and the process was super easy. They basically gave me right in the middle of KBB maybe a little more. Took a hour from walk in to walk out.

This isn't the case for the majority of the time. If you are eying a car they are desperate to unload, the dealer might beat carmax, but that's a whole other can of worms since they are making it up somewhere else.

OP, the offer is good for 7 days I believe. You can use it as leverage at the dealer, but most of the time, the dealer cannot beat carmax. Carmax has a lower overhead than the dealer they can make those kind of offers.

You can almost always get a better deal in a private sale, that goes without saying.

I got 15k for Accord. One dealer didn't want it, another gave me 13k. Best private party offer was 14k. I was surprised
