No post count in off-topic is LAME

Sorry, I know the mods and most of you guys here will disagree with me, but I think this new thing is lame.

I know that disabling post count in off topic will make members feel less compelled to spam the forum since they don't get any posts from it. However, it also makes members (Maybe it's just me) discourged to post because it counts for nothing. I know, posts count don't really even count for anything, but it's lame when I had 1200 posts and I went down to 164. That's depressing.

Most people wouldn't make a big deal out of this, but I love this forum, and it sucks that most of my posts don't count for anything.

I think it's really lame. And, if you guys did this because of all the new members coming in and spamming, they're gone now. So can the forum go back to normal, PLEASEEEE?

Muchos gracias!

I'm with you. Gosh, I didn't even know. How could a five paragraph discourse on ontology (or maybe one on beer, for that matter) be worth less than a pair of smileys anyhow? I feel so devalued. This is

enroutte, i don't think it's post count that counts, but the fact that you feel about the forum the way you do. plus, people that have been here for a while know you well so even after all the demotions took place, you're a well-respected member to me.

You are a respected member and I think most ppl are aware so I agree w/ Napoleon and would'nt worry about it too much.

That being said - maybe off topics posts should count like 0.5 or 0.25 posts or something like that?

Mods?

It hasn't slowed me down. I still post nonsense in the off-topic like there's no tomorrow!

e90post is driven by vBulletin & unless some serious code hacking is going on, it wouldn't be worth it to make each post in the "off topic" section be worth a different value.

One other solution, which I've implemented on another vb site, is to have a user rating system whereby fellow e90post members could give another member a + or - rating based on insightful posts.

Or we could all just stop worrying about it and enjoy driving.

+ or - rating *per* post? Because I see *quite* a bit of bilge posted on the forums.

I personally like the lack of post-counts in the off-topic forums. There were quite a few post whores, including those that spawned out of nowhere.

yeah, partial post count wouldn't be an easy thing to do, although, it is possible.

i have to say though that i like it like it is right now. it did weed out a lot of threads that were basically meaningless conversations between two or three people.

I have an idea. What if the moderators came up with a creative compromise to include off-topic posts in the post count prior to the rule change. The "older" members would be grandfathered in, and the new rule would still apply to everyone for topic and off-topic postings made after the change.

The rule change didn't affect me much, but I can see how changing the rules to a game this far into it, especially for those whom it was important, would be discouraging.

Well admin, what do you think? Mark mentioned that he had some opinions on the topic, but I don't think he ever said what they were.

yeah, that is a good suggestion. again though, i don't know if it's going to be easy to do for the moderators. not sure how the DB is setup in vBulletin but i assume this would have to be done manually since you'd be overriding rules you set up yourself. there could be a [php] script written to do it in a batch though.

You'd have to change the php code itself, and unless you understand php programming, I think it would be quite a job...

that's what i do for a living...

i still don't think this would require any code changes to the existing source since it would only be a one time update in post count. so, the way i think it's set up is:
- all the posts are in the DB. they are all labeled somehow to determine which forum they belong to (forums have IDs, as well as posts).
- in the query that determines post count is a set of forum IDs that are included or excluded from the count.

to add the post counts to only posts from the "off-topic" forum and members that have been here longer than when the demotions happened, a few things would need to be done. but it would not require any changes to the current code base, i believe.

Well, let's do a new poll, and maybe the moderators would make an exception for Enroutte, since she is an e90 VIP us guys would hate to scare away.
