No one cares about second best, but who has the second best DCT to Porsche's PDK?

I was going to write an article about it, but it would be full opinion, so I scrapped the article and just want to have a discussion.

Porsche is the king of DCT. Everyone loves PDK. If someone asks what the best DCT is it is PDK, no one argues over it.

Well who has the second best?

In my opinion, it is a combo of BMW and Ferrari. I cannot really pick which because well I have only driven like 5 of each car and in some cases only a few track laps.

Who do you think has a DCT that is rightttttt there to Porsche's PDK?

I would say the VW/Audi DSG which is probably derived from the PDK is second best. I like my DCT but think the DSG on the GTI, Golf R and S3 seem to work better.

I was not aware 135is had DCTs. I thought they were just auto's with manual shifting options.

The 135i's got the DCT when the N55s replaced the N54 motors in 2010. From my understanding the DCT in the 135i's are the same as the ones used in the M3/M4s. The M cars got different software/programming.

Its the other way around.
Porsche uses VW/Audi based gearboxes (and boxes made by ZF; Porsche doesnt make gearboxes themselves afaik)

I figured they are related, wasn't 100% sure on the pedigree.

ZF provides the hardware but each manufacturer come with their own programming and that can make a huge difference.

And they're probably the same transmission(s) . . . they're both made by Getrag. I think the last gen M3 and the California/458 both used the same one. Not sure which model the 488 is using.

I doubt they're the same....
Ferrari uses a transaxle gearbox.
Also power/torque output is usually gearbox specific

Ferrari uses the 7DCL750 in a lot of their production cars (track oriented cars usually get a Hewland box).
Thats not one that'll fit any bmw.
M3/M5 uses the 7DCI700

Then wouldn't it have been cool if the M3 had paddles only and no gear selector like the Ferrari's do.

I've driven many ferrari's and have a circle of people that own them but I don't think they will say it's #2. Maybe not even #3. Ferrari's aren't known for their steller tranny maybe above average but certainly not top 2.

The PDK is definitely the best IMO too. I think its a toss up between the DCT in the Audi R8 or the tranny in the McLaren.

The worst has to be in the Lamborghini Aventador. It's almost undriveable in low speed city driving.

Things I have read say that the horrible transmission in the Aventador is engineered to be horrible.

Meaning the violent jolt of each gear was meant to be there and that is why they went single clutch auto because for each gear they want to jolt the driver into seat.

To be fair, the Aventador is a single clutch, so it's gonna suck, just like any single clutch auto manual.

Yep, I read that they did that by design because of the experience to feel the gear change jolting you in the drivers seat.

That's a zf8 torque converter auto. He's referring to a true semi auto such as the SMG.
