oil testing for Rod bearing failure
You can send away for an oil testing kit, but it often takes too long
I've found that best way to test for impurities is to taste it. A little bit on your finger, it should have a strong nutty flavor, should not smell or taste burnt, if you feel any grit in your mouth or if your gums bleed, could be excessive metal fillings. However don't try this method however with PS fluid or antifreeze, AF always has a sweet taste so you wont tell much and PS fluid smells and tastes gross, you'll probably hurl. I've got that good at tasting oil, I can blind taste oil and tell you which engine it came from, N52 is my favorite, synthetic of course ! Oh and ALWAYS get a professional do do your oil change |

Shouldn't this thread be titled "oil tasting" instead of oil testing?

You can try, but it will never be as good as doing this prank on new residents with the urine samples.
And it opens up new vistas in the 'which oil' dept - now we can search for one with a distinctive nutty leathery fruity presence, and with good mouth feel. |

On the serious side, is there a mileage interval that you can send your oil to get tested? I've been wanting to do it, but I just did an oil change like 3k miles ago

There is no set mileage you need to have. I have used Blackstone Labs many times. I'd go 7k miles or so then send it to the lab and see what they say. Usually if wear metals look good and the oil has additive life left, they will say it can go longer.

Usually you do one sample to establish a baseline, then compare the samples after that.

Depends what you want from it. I do a sample every 1500 miles or so. Costs $28 and takes 30 seconds to pull out a couple oz of oil. The thing about uoa's is that the more frequently you do them, the better your chances are of catching a disaster before it happens. Sure sometimes it's a slow wear that kills a bearing but many times it happens very quickly and the only way to catch it is frequent testing.
