Who do you use for insurance (USA)?

In purchasing my first BMW last week, I got my revised quote back from my insurance agent which made me realize what a difference in insurance cost a German car can make (previous car was a Ford, wife has a Honda CRV)

We are currently with Allstate and have been so for quite a while. I have several policies through them for car, home, umbrella, and business. Even with all of these policies, and just about every discount they offer (other than that stupid driving-behavior tracking thing) it's still expensive AF. I did a quote on Progressive with the same coverage, and it came out to less than half than what I pay with Allstate, and that's without a multi-policy discount...

However, I love my Allstate agent, and having all my insurance policies taken care of by someone who instantly answers the phone or my email and takes care of everything, is awesome. But not over $1,000/yr awesome.

Who do you all have as a carrier, and do you like them?

Just switched from Progressive to USAA. We had been with Progressive for almost 15yrs and out of the blue they raised our rates by about 25%. Since I'm a USAA member we checked with them and got a better deal than Progressive before the bump. Their customer service is fantastic too.

Recently switched from Farmer's to Geico and our rates dropped a ton.

I work in the industry (auto body), and in our experience USAA is the best if you qualify. After USAA, Amica is the next best for customer service, followed by AAA and then down the list with the large companies (Allstate, Farmers, StateFarm) all being just terrible. I use AAA for my own insurance, as I don't qualify for USAA, and Amica was just a little more than I wanted to pay.

Yeah Amica seems to be one of the best. The quote I got from their website was even $900/yr cheaper than my current plan with Allstate.

Nationwide, although I liked the company better when I could get face-to-face with a local agent instead of just calling an 800 number. We recently had a vehicle claim, thanks to severe weather and 31 hail dents, and the service was exemplary. The adjuster was a car guy who offered several repair and payment alternatives, all of which were acceptable.

Does Nationwide still have agents then? I currently go through an agent for all things Allstate, and other than cost, it's going to be hard to pass up.

You don't have to have served. Here are the current rules.

Dependents once removed are eligible, as are the same as many government employees. My dad worked for the DoD as a high-level manager for AAFES; that's how I'm eligible. He never served.

Well, unfortunately for me, the closest thing to any sort of military or government body duty in my family is an uncle who served in Vietnam. Otherwise I'd check it out!

Looked into making the same move as Progressive's quote was about $300 less than what I was paying. After talking to Geico though, they were able to get me on some "new product" they claimed they have, which is only available for people with excellent credit. The whole thing was probably BS but it did drop my insurance $800 a year.

Now I pay $2200 a year for my wife and myself for 4 cars (M3, Audi Allroad, Boxster S, Lexus RX350) with $500 deductible for collision and $100 for comprehensive.

Yeah that's a little less than me, with only 2 cars, no priors, home owner, top tier credit, etc. oh well.

I don't think so. A few years ago, both the local agents I knew (in separate offices) said they were switching to other companies because Nationwide wasn't going to use local agents anymore. You need to call the toll-free number for any type of insurance AFAIK.

May be worth calling them and threaten to switch. They seem to come up with better rates pretty quickly, especially given your qualifications

Are you guys buying basic coverage or is south florida insurance just that bad?

100/300 costing me an arm and a leg for 3 cars down here. Almost as much as I was paying in Canada.

Anybody who can afford an M3/4 should have more than 100/300 coverage.... WAY more. In fact you should have a minimum $1 million umbrella policy on top of your auto limits. I'd recommend at least 250/500 for auto and the million or more umbrella policy. It's very cheap insurance for what you may lose if you're underinsured but have substantial assets.

Of course, if you are poor, have no assets or sink all your money into an M3 and don't own a house or anything then minimum liability limits are fine.
