My wife is bored with her F30. I asked to get anything but a BMW. Every time I drive that stupid thing I curse a BMW enginerd for the double push to turn it off. No other brand has that, it's so annoying. I leave the car half on every time I drive it.

I press the button above the start-stop button once in my M4 and it remembers my command. I never have to press it again. Ever. Strange that it is different in other cars. Maybe it's an M car thing.

No, that's the same. The start stop button works and retains memory. That works fine. It's the power button. All of our previous BMW's without ASS just required one push of the power button (like every other car with keyless) to turn off. Now you have to press the power button twice every time. I'm clearly a village idiot because I never remember. It earns lots of sighs from the spousal unit.

He is referring to turning off the accessories when you shut the engine off. It's pretty obnoxious. My father's X5 and mother's X1 do it.

I really like that feature. Allows me to turn the engine off and still listen to music, etc. while my wife runs into the store or dry cleaners.

Pressing the power button twice must be a new thing. I didn't have it in the 2014 i8 or on the M4. That's really dumb of BMW.

It really doesn't piss me off at all. I don't see any reason to be sitting there with the engine running for a few minutes, unless it's cold or hot and the car can't keep me comfortable. Some of the waits at lights are just unreasonably long and there's no reason to keep the engine running. What i don't like is when it's a "stop and go", you are stopping at a stopsign or only momentarily, you don't want the engine shutting down/coming back to life there. I'd say the tolerance on the BMW is a little too aggressive, but other than that, it really doesn't piss me off. I'm not sure what the point is of running the engine at idle for minutes on end and not moving.

Just hold the button on shutdown. Ta-da! Single-press engine/accessories shutdown. At least it works on my pre-lci e92...

You don't have to press a second time time to turn off accessories as it turns off anyway when you lock the car. I'm not a big fan of it either but doesn't bother me too much since I know it'll turn off on its own after like 10 minutes or when locking the car.

Yeah, that's my normal situation. Just lock the doors and assume it will figure it out.

additional wear on engine is totally right.. engine ll start draining few seconds later turning of the engine.. battery is a easy replacement which newer batts that capable of doing more starts are more expensive than ordinary ones.. but for me is the most harmful one.. you were flooring it and you come to a dead stop with a turbo engine.. and engine stops.. no one is lubricating the turbos or heated engine upper parts.. thats really harmful.. physics..

It protects against that, doesn't shut off under those conditions.

The coding for auto stop start depends on country more so than model. Here in Australia, our Government treat us like idiots so they get the manufacturers to program it to be active on every start. I think US cars remember the last setting.

The third option is off by default which thanks to coding, mine is now set to.

In the US, for the 2er, the auto start-stop is only there (and is active) for the Eco Pro mode and it doesn't remember your setting. You can code it to remember the last setting or just stay inactive even when selecting Eco Pro mode with coding, though.

My loaner 440i had the auto start-stop in Comfort mode as well as Eco Pro, and it also did not remember the last setting.

I think how this (among many other) feature works also depends on the model, not just the region.

Exactly. The stop-start system looks at virtually all engine parameters, enviromental parameters and user requirement parameters.
It wont work when its too cold outside or if the powerdraw on the battery is too high or the cabin needs to be cooled etc etc.

As for workings I think it works fine on a manual transmission, and a bit more annoying on an automatic.
On a manual it wont engage when the clutch is pressed, only when the car is set in neutral and the clutch is depressed. You only do that when you see that traffic really comes to a halt and you expect to sit there for some time.
If I have to stop for 15 sec. I'm not going to put the gearbox in neutral and lift the clutch, I just hold it in 1st gear.

The argument the video makes that 'carmakers know better whats good for you than yourself' is totally bullcrap. They totally forget the fact that carmakers (european ones at least and I think also Japanese ones) are subjected to emission standards for the fleet they're producing. Not conforming to those standards means fines, or in worst case not being able to produce certain models.
If start stop works in the lab measurement cycle on which they set the standard, then go for it. I'd rather pay less for a car than more.... But I dont think the people who make this video know how these regulations work.

The guy is wrong. He says I can idle my engine all day long and it still won't cost price of a burger. My V8 50i consumes about 0.5-1 gal per hour of idling easily - that's about up to $3-4 of premium gas and in cities like NYC or LA I'm going to idle that much or more easily. A McDouble burger costs about $1.5 - so the guy is bullshiter

He also wrong on other aspects of it: starters for my 50i start/stop are designed heavy duty and have about 2-3 times more cycles in them than i will ever use owning my car for 20 years. Another thing he is wrong is that warmed up engine hardly uses anything to start up - only cold engine has wear and tear. The guy is full of it

Probably the funniest video of his BS is about ECU remap - he goes on to condemn all tunes/flashes and say they are fake and bad based on some guy on VW Amarok lol who got his filter clogged lol
