Shipping a car to europe
Has anyone done this or considered doing this? I am possibly taking a job in Munich (not with BMW) and where the company is, I would need a car, so figured maybe I can ship my X5 with me instead of selling it and buying another car (RS4 avant does sound nice though)
Anyone done this and is it possible to run around with a car with US state plates? OR would I need to switch to Euro plates? |

Many cars depreciate wildly differently over there, where gas is currently $6.32/US gallon and cars are taxed on engine displacement and CO2 output. So if you're willing to pay to play, larger engines and low efficiency cars are typically cheaper on the used market than here. Ferraris, RS Audis, and many other cars with high resale values here can be much cheaper there. |

Figured that might be the case. I knew I'd have to get a Euro plate at some point. I may just keep my car here for a while, leave it at the parents house or something and pick up a car over there with cash.

Just remember that when you drive into surrounding countries, the unlimited speed limit thing goes out the window and cops start to care again. |

Bring a z28 camaro or some other rare muscle car. Import. Then sell.

If there's any way you can swing a company car - do it. Car is expensive, insurance is expensive, fuel is VERY expensive compared to US.

Not to mention the time and cost of just getting your license. Get your company to pay for that too
Right on red is illegal, stay to the right unless you're actively passing. Absolutely obey speed limits as there are lots of traffic cams in Bavaria. You must run snow tires through the winter. There are hundreds more. |

I don't know the rules about licensing and what kind of visa you are there on, expat wages all that shit, but at the very least give AAA $20 for an international drivers permit. It basically is a more widely recognized version of your current license. And carry your passport with you. At least until you're actually there and figure out what the hell you do and do not need to do, that will get you around with minimal hassle.

Appreciate it everybody! Yea I was planning to look into an international drivers permit or license as I'm sure that could last me a little before I needed to take a test there. Right on red is illegal within NYC city limits so at least I'm used to that lol.

A international drivers license is like $30 from AAA and good for a year. I got one just incase when I did ED.
