Never been into Amsterdam itself, but flown into schippol airport numerous times. There is a train station at the airport which will take you into town.
Depending how open minded you or your wife are, there are the 'coffee shops' and red light district which could be a giggle. |

If you like pancakes, stop in and get some poffertjes (probably pretty much anywhere) for breakfast one day. I think they are pretty common, but I seem to recall stopping in at basically a poffertjes house which was pretty close to downtown. Just a stand alone building somewhere...can't quite remember where it was.
Have a drink in the square downtown, where Amsterdam brewery is (or was anyway when I was there in 2003). Walk around the downtown. There are a number of good historical sites / museums as I recall. Grab some wine, cheese, bread and chocolate and head back to the hotel for a dutch dinner in the room. Then dutch oven the wife to complete the experience. Public transport is pretty good. I relied exclusively on it. |

Go straight to the train station, head to Bruges. You can thank me later.

Public transportation is excellent, no worries there. Boat tour is fun, a good way to start and help decide where to walk later. If your'e super jet lagged and nodding off though the boat could make you a little nauseated. If you plan to see the Anne Frank house buy tickets ASAP, it gets booked out way in advance.
Been there a few times on intentionally long layovers, no plans just bounce around for the day. Wish I had more to share other than just go with the flow and relax and have fun, |

Museums, pancakes, coffee shops, Indonesian food, walk around admiring all the beautiful women riding bikes in short skirts. Anne Frank house for sure, very moving. We were there about 36 hours on the way home from Italy a few years ago and can't wait to go back.

Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank House, canal tour by boat.
But mind you, A'dam centre is very very very very touristic, you won't see so much diversity and different nationalities anywhere in the world. Not in London, not in Paris, not in NYC, not in LA, not in Tokio. Not kidding ![]() So a very busy place to be.... Every time we visit the centre my wife(latina) says to me I'm the only real dutch dutchman in Amsterdam ![]() Cheers Robin

Hard to say as I don’t know your budget, age or preferences. But you will have a great time!
The city centre is compact, everything can easily be navigated on foot. The trip from Schiphol airport will take just 15 minutes by train, platform directly underneath the terminal. Or take a taxi (20-30 mins). IMO, any trip to Amsterdam should include a canal boat trip to check out the 17th century canal belt. Plenty of great but expensive hotels include the Conservatorium, the W, the Toren and Sofitel the Grand. Ignore P1et, Belgium is a mess ![]()

Taking a train from the airport to the city is fast and cost effective.
I recommend lots of walking around and exploring. I liked the Heineken tour more than all of the museums (not a huge fan, not my thing). Grabbing a bier at some random patio / pub is nice when you get tired of walking and need a break.

Thanks for all the suggestions guy. My knowledge to Amsterdam is pretty much limited to the movie Eurotrip and NatGeo documentaries on sex workers. lol
Seems like the place is pretty chill. |

Do: Van Gogh Museum, Canal Tour via boat, drink genever, eat some herring, have a picnic in Vondelpark if the weather is decent, Anne Frank Museum
Don't: The Heineken Experience tour, limit your visit to just the RLD and surrounding blocks.
