sadly true...... no roll bars, no seatbelts, no Nomex, papier-mache polo helmets. i suppose part of it was down to "we didn't know any better", but sometimes I wonder if a lot of that apparently fatalistic attitude wasn't related to the proximity to the cataclysm of World War II. interesting to notice that in the above pictures of Fangio and Ascari the goggles they're wearing are tanker goggles.

That picture above of Fangio was taken by Jesse Alexander. It's one of my favorite pictures, a tie with another Alexander picture of Jim Clark defying physics in a Lotus Cortina. With that very much in mind I took this picture with my cell phone in 2017. It is exactly the same car that Alexander photographed 60 years earlier.

Hate watching those old videos, reminds me of a lot of things that were better back in the day.

I know it's never going to happen, but I'd love to see them put manual gear boxes back in the F1 cars.
