It's the end of the road for BMW oil burners in the United States. The German luxury brand confirmed with Motor Authority the diesel engine will disappear from U.S. shores after the 2018 model year as BMW focuses on plug-in hybrid vehicles.

BMW spokesperson Alexander Schmuck told MA, "we are putting all our eggs in the PHEV basket" as the brand announced improvements for the 2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid coming to the U.S. The spokesman added the next-generation X5 plug-in hybrid should return around 40 miles of pure electric range, which is up substantially from the current model's 14-mile estimated range.

The 2021 X5 plug-in will also switch from a 2.0-liter inline-4 in to a 3.0-liter inline-6 for the internal-combustion engine side of things. As for the lithium-ion battery, it's mounted in under the floor of the rear cargo area to help minimize cabin space losses. The brand said the battery will claim 5.3 cubic feet of cargo space versus a standard X5, but 60 cubic feet of cargo space is still available with all seats folded down.

Set as a 2021 model, expect the next plug-in X5 to arrive in 2020 and carry "super ultra-low emissions vehicle" or SULEV certification, meaning it will put out 90 percent less emissions than the average gasoline-powered vehicle.

The end of BMW diesel models in the U.S. comes just months after the brand certified the 2018 BMW 540d xDrive for sale in the country. The luxury sedan features a 3.0-liter inline-6 turbodiesel engine, which American buyers have already sampled with the X5d. The confirmation also squashes rumors and previous reports that suggested the next-generation 3-Series and X3 will gain a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder diesel engine, codenamed B47.

Refocusing on plug-in hybrid vehicles and electric cars also underscores BMW's electrification roadmap. The German marque will launch 25 electrified cars by 2025 and 12 will feature battery-electric powertrains. Even BMW's M division won't steer clear of plug-in hybrids; BMW CEO Harald Krueger told Reuters in a 2017 report that the electrification plan "includes the Rolls-Royce brand and BMW M vehicles."

BMW is the latest automaker to eliminate diesels from its U.S. lineup, at least, and focus on plug-in hybrids and electric cars.

A BMW spokesman told Green Car Reports on Tuesday that it will drop diesels from its lineup for 2019.

"We're putting all our eggs in the PHEV basket," said BMW spokesman Alexander Schmuck.

BMW currently sells five plug-in hybrid models in the U.S. Those include the 3-Series, 5-Series, 7-Series sedans, the X5 SUV, and the i8 coupe.

Most of BMW's plug-in hybrids are designated by an "e" at the end of their model names, such as the BMW 330e, 530e, and X5 xDrive40e. Those models on the market today have only 14 to 16 miles of electric range, according to their EPA ratings.

Last week BMW revealed a new plug-in version of the X5 for 2021, the X5 xDrive45e, which may have up to 50 miles of electric range with larger batteries and a new engine.

Finding enough space for batteries has been a challenge in BMW's plug-in hybrids, but a company supplier recently showed a prototype BMW i3 with three times the battery capacity in the same footprint of the original, which could allow BMW to pack far more range into its plug-in hybrids.

The new battery is expected to be used in the company's upcoming iNext electric sedan, which is due to be revealed at the end of the week.

The spokesman also said the upcoming X5 xDrive45e will use an inline-6, which will be easier for the company to meet California's SULEV clean-air standards.

Damn I am a bit upset. Was looking forward to replacing the 2015 BMW X5d with the newer one and diesel engine. Guess need to look into E-hybrids like the next gen Cayenne as the BMW e hybrid is going to take 1 more year to come which I have no clue why its taking that long

This one will allow for approx 40-50 mpgE with charged battery and gas. Not a bad option. My salesman at Porsche says his Panamera E-Hybrid is charged everynight and he only puts gas in it 1x every 2 weeks... Yeah dont ask how he even affords a Panamera lol.

If you watch the 1st. episode of new Netflix series "Dirty Money" about VW's diesel debacle you might not want a diesel. It's very well done and implicates BMW and MB as well towards the end. Bottom line these engines pollute 400% to 500% more than the manufacturers say. It's worth watching. BMW's decision might very well be related to this since the motors might not pass emission regs.

Just curious to ask, where else can you go? All the germans have gotten rid of their diesel vehicles and it seems only Chevy is introducing diesels but only for limited models.

Oh yeah I forgot, although I think they're very slow. I think the F-Pace has a 2.0T diesel that takes 9+ seconds to 60, which in my opinion is unacceptable for a $60+ suv. Plus Jag/Land Rover reliability seems to be a huge risk.

This is all that's left , I came to bmw from Audi (still have an audi) due to the lack of quality diesel offerings in USA.

If you want a diesel the market in America is slim, I shopped everything , almost purchase a TDI sports wagen, but it was a lifeless commuter...
I see a good amount of the 320d variants around me , so they must sell well

Who doesn't want a luxury wagon that gets 45mpg?

Great torque and amazing gas mileage. I am getting 31 mpg on the 2015 X5d. If you are driving 70-80 miles commute daily its well worth it as you can get 650 plus miles on a tank of gas.
