Contesting a speeding ticket through a written letter
So.... I got a speeding ticket last week and tomorrow is the last day to respond to it so I went down to the Dist Court and gave them my John Handcock and checked the box that says CONTEST.
Slight problem... the earliest they can get me in for a court date is September 11th.... I leave for New York last week of August (for college), the clerk asks if I would like to consider fighting the ticket through mail. I would basically write everything I would say in court and send it in.. Left with no other option (other than a attorney) I said yes and she told me I have till August 20th to send it in. The Ticket: Coming back home from the stealership after my 15k miles service, around 7:03PM (I-5 Southbound, in Federal Way for those that live in WA)... It was a Tuesday way after rush hour, I was driving in the carpool/ furthest left lane. Traffic was going 75-80mph, I did not pass anyone, and if there were passing involved it was the car besides me... State patrol pulls me over and says I was going 80 on a 60 and asked why I was 'speeding' I respond... Sir, I was going 80mph because the rest of the cars in my lane and the other two lanes to my right were going approximately the same speed; I was going with the flow of traffic. Goes through the standard procedure, gives me a ticket and calls it a day. My Question: I am going to dispute the ticket and plead not guilty, simply by stating the RCW (Revised Code of Washington) that mentions the pass on the left and cruise on the right ordeal. and how state patrol can pull you over for slowing down traffic on the left lanes.. I will mention in the letter that I did not pass a single vehicle, or portray myself in a dangerous manor (reckless driving).. Also mention that the other vehicles were driving at nearly the same speed or faster. What do you think my chances are? and also do you have any advice on what else I should include in my letter? Thanks for reading! |

Easiest way is to just hire a lawyer to handle it. I've been there and it's worth the $1000-$1200.

I'm not going to say clearly that was going 80, I'm going to state that I was going the same speed as the traffic.
